An electromagnetic stabilizer is arranged above the blow-off device and has a plurality of individual magnets for stabilizing the metal strip after leaving the coating container and the blow-off device. In order to further increase the efficiency of the apparatus, at least some of the magnets of the stabilizer are formed as pot magnets with pot coils.

The invention provides a method for removal of an excess of a liquid metal coating from a substrate, such as a hot dip coated metal substrate, and in preferred embodiments, for control of metal coating thickness.The method involves moving the substrate through a stationary pulsating or alternating magnetic flux. The flux is directed in a path which enters the coating at an entry zone and exits from the coating at an exit zone, those zones being on the external surface of the coating and spaced apart in the direction of advance of the substrate. The frequency and intensity of the flux are controlled so as to exert on the coating surface a force opposing the viscous drag forces exerted in the coating by the moving substrate. Apparatus for use in performing the method is described.

There are provided an electromagnetic wiping device, a plated steel sheet wiping apparatus including the electromagnetic wiping device, and a method for manufacturing a plated steel sheet. A portion of a plating layer of a steel sheet having passed through a plating bath is preliminarily removed at least in an edge region of the steel sheet, and a gas wiping operation is performed. Therefore, overplating is prevented at least in the edge region of the steel sheet. In addition, since the load of gas wiping can be reduced while maintaining the line speed of the steel sheet, the quantity of scattered particles and the formation of dross can be reduced for improving the plating quality of the steel sheet and the productivity of a manufacturing process.

A hot dip coating system comprises a bath of molten coating metal contained in a vessel having a strip passage opening located below the top surface of the bath. A metal strip is directed along a path extending through the strip passage opening and through the bath of molten coating metal, to coat the strip. An electromagnet is employed to prevent the escape of the bulk of the molten coating metal from the bath through the strip passage opening while permitting the strip to move along its path. Expedients are provided to reduce leakage of molten coating metal through the strip passage opening.

A molten coating bath is contained in a vessel having a bottom opening upwardly through which the steel member is directed. Magnetic containment devices located below the vessel's bottom opening prevent the escape of molten metal from the vessel through the opening. There are no guide rolls, or other rolls that act on the continuous steel member, in the bath.
