Copolymers of vinyl chloride and 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate consisting of a copolymer with from 60 to 95% by weight of vinyl chloride monomer units and from 5 to 40% by weight of 2hydroxypropyl acrylate monomer units, having a K-value of from 20 to 60 measured in cyclohexanone, as well as the method of producing the same by continuous addition of the monomer mix to an aqueous emulsion.

THE REACTION PROCEEDS IN TWO DISTINCT STEPS, THE GRAFTING STEP REGUIRING THE PRESENCE OF A POLYMERIZATION CATALYST, AN ANIONIC SURFACTANT,AND AT LEAST ONE CATION OF THE GROUP: TRIETHANOLAMMONIUM, TRI(2-PROPANOL) AMMONIUM, DIETHANOL-AMMONIUM, AND C1-C3 ALKYLDIETHANOLAMMONIUM. NOVEL GRAFTED COPOLYMERS OF 2-CHLORO-1,3BUTADIENES PRODUCED BY THIS PROCESS RANGE FROM RUBBERY TO PLASTIC MATERIALS. GRAFTED COPOLYMERS OF 2-CHLORO-1,3-BUTADIENES WITH METHYL METHACRYLATE ARE EXCELLENT ADHESIVES FOR PLASTICIZED POLYVINYL CHLORIDE.

In a photopolymerizable composition which comprises an addition polymer, an initiation system, and a polymerizable inhibitor, the improvement of using a preformed macromolecular binding agent which is a copolymer of a first monomer of a styrene-type material or a non-acidic vinyl compound and an unsaturated carboxyl-containing monomer, wherein the ratio of the first monomer to the unsaturated carboxyl-containing monomer is sufficient to render the binding agent soluble in a dilute alkaline solution. The composition may be developed in an alkaline aqueous solution and the resist formed thereby is impervious to conventional plating and etching solutions.
Abstract:
There is disclosed a process for the preparation of copolymers of a vinyl halide and a long-chain aliphatic vinyl monomer. In accordance with the process, an aqueous dispersion is formed of a preformed vinyl halide polymer, a vinyl halide monomer and a long-chain aliphatic ether monomer capable of copolymerizing with the vinyl halide monomer. Copolymerization of said monomers in the presence of the aqueous dispersion of the preformed polymer leads to a polymeric particle whose shell contains a major proportion of the polymeric long-chain aliphatic ether monomer and whose core is essentially devoid of this monomer. This preferential concentration of a lubricating monomer on the outer shell of the particle leads to greatly improved flow with only a minor loss in glass temperature.
