Disclosed is a method for improving filtration in the preparation of an alkaline earth metal alkyltoluene sulfonate concentrate by selectively controlling the meta, ortho, para isomer distribution of the alkyl group of the alkyltoluene produced by the process comprising alkylating toluene with at least one isomerized normal alpha olefin, having from about 18 to about 30 carbon atoms and having from 20% to 100% branching in an alkylation process which includes monitoring % isomer formation and adjusting an alkylation process parameter in order to provide a target specified isomer content of less than 38% meta-isomer content; and thereafter sulfonating and neutralizing to produce a low base number sulfonated alkyltoluene concentrate having a Base Number of about 2 to 60 (ASTM D 2896).

In preparing alkanesolfonic acids by sulfoxidation of n-paraffins containing between 12 and 18 carbon atoms, using ultraviolet radiation to initiate the reaction (light-water process), a mixture is obtained which spontaneously allows a substantial part of the unconverted n-paraffins to phase separate from a phase containing the remainder of the reaction mixture containing the alkanesulfonic acids together with water, sulfuric acid and n-paraffins.The remainder of the mixture is fed with one or more alcohols having four or less than four carbon atoms, preferably isopropanol, to form a two-phase mixture.The two-phase mixture is extracted with supercritical carbon dioxide, which extracts the n-paraffins, these being recycled to the sulfoxidation process.The paraffin-free product is suitable for preparing alkane-sulfonates of the desired type by neutralization with suitable bases.

Mixtures of C.sub.12 -C.sub.18 n-paraffins with paraffinsulphonic acids having the same number of carbon atoms, water and sulphuric acid, and obtained by sulphoxidation of said paraffins with SO.sub.2 and O.sub.2 in the presence of water and UV radiation are stripped of their excess SO.sub.2 and decanted to separate most of the paraffins, and obtain a residual mixture. The residual mixture is dehydrated according to the invention until a two-phase system forms or at least until the mixture becomes turbid, and the dehydrated mixture either as such or after separating the heavier phase consisting of water and sulphuric acid is extracted with supercritical CO.sub.2, which removes with it the n-paraffins, these being reused in the sulphoxidation process.

Sulfate and sulfonate derivatives of unsaturated fatty alcohols, processes for making them, and methods of using them are disclosed. In one aspect, a monounsaturated fatty alcohol composition is made by reducing a metathesis-derived monounsaturated alkyl ester. The fatty alcohol composition is then converted to a sulfate or sulfonate derivative by one or more of alkoxylation, sulfation, sulfonation, and sulfitation. Of particular interest are the sulfate and ether sulfate derivatives. Microscopy studies indicate that the unsaturated sodium sulfates in particular have a lamellar phase that should enable formulation at high actives levels. Sulfate compositions comprising 40 to 60 wt. % of a monounsaturated fatty primary alcohol sulfate and 40 to 60 wt. % of a secondary hydroxyalkyl primary alcohol sulfate are also disclosed. The derivatives and sulfate compositions are valuable for many end-use applications, including, for example, agricultural dispersants, water-soluble herbicides, anionic emulsifiers for agricultural use, hard surface cleaners, light-duty liquid detergents, personal cleansers, gas well foamers for oilfield applications, laundry detergents, enhanced oil recovery compositions, latex paints, and specialty foams.
