    Abstract: A post launch pressurized gas production system and method includes a cell containing a pressurized gas producing medium, such as anhydrous sodium bicarbonate producing CO2 gas when heated. A plenum tank is in fluid communication with the cell. A heater heats the cell to produce gas delivered to the plenum tank storing the gas therein under pressure. A pressure vessel includes a propellant therein pressurized by the gas and in fluid communication with a thruster for delivery of the propellant to the thruster after pressurization by the gas.

    Abstract: An inflator for an air bag has, in a housing having a gas discharging port, a combustion chamber accommodating a molded article of a gas generating composition which is burnt to generate gas and ignition means to ignite the molded article of a gas generating composition. The molded article contains a metal component and meets the requirement: (A) the (theoretical) combustion flame temperature of the molded article of the gas generating composition is 2000° C. or less, and part or the whole of the metal or metal oxide after combustion of the molded article of the gas generating composition has a melting point not lower than the combustion flame temperature; and (B) bulk combustion residues remain in the combustion chamber at the time of combustion of the molded article of the gas generating composition.

    Abstract: Chlorate-free autoignition compositions are disclosed, and may be embodied in compositions comprised of (i) an azodiformamidine dinitrate (ADFD), a self-deflagrating, low ignition temperature fuel, (ii) an oxidizer (e.g., a perchlorate, nitrate or mixture thereof) and (iii) an ignition accelerator/augmentor (e.g., a metal or metal oxide powder).     Abstract: Method is provided for reducing the sensitivity of energetic materials (explosives, propellants and the like) to detonation induced by mechanical shock or by application of pronounced heat, e.g. by a laser beam. Examples of such energetic materials are fluorine azide and chlorine azide which are model HEDM propellants which are prone to accidental detonation in the solid state. The polycrystalline forms of such solids are sensitive to and readily detonated by, mechanical shock and pulsed laser photolysis. The method of the invention serves to desensitize such energetic materials by forming them as amorphous (disordered) solids by vapor deposition thereof onto a relatively cold substrate, which amorphous form desensitizes them relative to more conventional polycrystalline forms of these energetic materials though both contain about the same amount of chemical energy.

    Abstract: Nonazide gas generating compositions are formed from a nonazide fuel, an oxidizer, and a heat absorbing additive in the form of a glass compound. The additive effects a reduction in the combustion temperature of the gas generant, thereby resulting in inflating gases having a reduced content of toxic gases such as NO.sub.x and CO. The gas generants are therefore nontoxic and useful for inflating a vehicle occupant restraint system.
