Abstract: A combustible element includes regions of fuel material interspersed with regions of oxidizer material. The element may be made by additive manufacturing processes, such as three-dimensional printing, with the fuel material regions and the oxidizer material regions placed in appropriate locations in layer of the combustible element. For example, different extruders may be used to extrude and deposit portions of a fuel filament and an oxidizer filament at different locations in each layer of the combustible element. The combustible element may define a combustion chamber within the element, where combustion occurs when the combustible element is ignited. The fuel material and the oxidizer material may be selected, and their relative amounts may be controlled, such that desired relative amounts of fuel and oxidizer are present for combustion with desired characteristics, such as combustion rate.

Abstract: The invention is directed to a propellant charge, to a method of preparing a propellant charge, and to uses of the propellant charge. The propellant charge or grain of the invention comprises two or more energetic materials with different linear burn rate, wherein the two or more energetic materials are distributed within the charge or grain such that two perpendicular cross-sections of said propellant charge or grain have at least two linear burn rate gradients in non-parallel directions, wherein said propellant charge or grain is layered with layers having a layer thickness in the range of 1-10 000 μm, wherein, if the propellant charge or grain has a longitudinal axis, at least one of said perpendicular cross-sections is along said longitudinal axis, and wherein said propellant charge or grain further comprises one or more perforations.

Abstract: Solid propellant systems include a main propellant and a secondary propellant in contact with the first propellant that exhibits autoignition temperatures of at least about 100° F. lower than the autoignition temperature of the main propellant. The secondary propellant of the present invention is most advantageously employed with conventional AP-containing solid propellant formulations as the main propellant, especially formulations containing both AP, an energetic solid, and a binder. In especially preferred forms, the secondary propellant will include a nitramine which is at least one selected from nitroguanidine (NQ), cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX) and cyclotetramethylenetetranitramine (HMX), and a binder which is at least one selected from HTPB, HTPE or glycidyl azide polymer (GAP). Most preferably, the secondary propellant will include a combination of nitramines which includes NQ and one of RDX or HMX.
