The invention provides alumina agglomerates of the type obtained by dehydrating an aluminum hydroxide or oxyhydroxide, agglomerating the alumina obtained, hydrothermally treating the agglomerates and calcining, characterized in that: they have a specific surface area in the range 90 m2/g to 220 m2/g, preferably in the range 100 m2/g to 200 m2/g; they have a V37 null in the range 40 ml/100 g to 65 ml/100 g, preferably in the range 45 ml/100 g to 60 ml/100 g; they have a V200 null of 12 ml/100 g or more, preferably 15 ml/100 g or more, more preferably 18 ml/100 g or more; and they have a specific surface area/V200 null ratio of 10 or less, preferably 8.5 or less, more preferably 7 or less. The invention also provides a catalyst support, an adsorbent material and a catalyst constituted by said agglomerates. The invention also provides methods for preparing said agglomerates.

A further purpose of the invention is a method for producing abrasive grains containing alumina, comprising melting of the alumina, its casting at a constant flow rate of less than 80 kg/min, and its cooling by dispersion of the molten alumina in fine droplets to give particles with a size of less than 1 mm. This dispersion is, preferably, conducted by ultrasound-assisted atomization using a frequency of between 15 and 50 MHz. The abrasive grains of the invention are used in particular to produce grindwheels.

The invention relates to a method for producing a stable aluminium hydroxide gel on the basis of the sodium aluminate lye which is obtained during the production of Al2O3 according to the BAYER method. The caustic mol ratio (Na2Ofree/Al2O3) of the lye containing aluminate is adjusted to smaller than 1.6. The lye is treated with carboxylic acid anhydride, whereby the aluminium hydroxide gel is precipitated at a temperature of below approximately 40null C., whereby the pH value ranges from 8 to 12. The precipitation product and the lye are separated from one another. The precipitation product is washed and dried, whereby the amorphous structure is obtained.

Aluminium hydroxide of improved thermal stability is produced by spray-drying of an aqueous slurry of aluminium hydroxide at 400 to 600null C drying gas temperature. The resulting aluminium hydroxide is suitable as a flame retardant filler in polymeric systems with high processing temperatures. It has a low specific surface area and good rheological properties.
