摘要: A high-speed transportation system comprises an evacuated travel conduit divided into a plurality of segments by closable gates, and associated with corresponding segment pumps that maintain operating vacuums within the segments when vehicles are present. When a segment is unoccupied, energy is saved by closing the adjoining gates and deactivating the associated segment pump, thereby deactivating the segment and allowing the segment's internal pressure to rise due to leakage. As a vehicle approaches, the segment pump is reactivated, lowering the internal pressure to the operating vacuum, and the gates are opened. Embodiments include a boom-tank system that can accelerate re-evacuation of a segment having an increased internal pressure by establishing fluid communication with at least one recently deactivated segment having a lower internal pressure. As a vehicle transits the conduit, a rolling, contiguous group of activated segments surrounding and in advance of the vehicle can be maintained.

摘要: A transportation system is disclosed that includes a monorail (or other vehicle) along a column-supported rail wherein a linear induction motor's (‘LIM’) connection to an assembly, to which the monorail/vehicle is attached, enables the LIM to essentially assist an air bearing, positioned between the rail and assembly, such that less air pressure is required. In some embodiments, a control system assists in adjusting the air pressure supplied—e.g., based on LIM data and/or weight (of vehicle and/or cargo). Further disclosed is a compliant air bearing that minimizes air loss during vertical and lateral curves, including embodiments where the air bearing is positioned relative to the rail such that a plenum area is smaller than a semi-enclosed cavity area. Additionally disclosed is a brake system that includes a brake pad attached to the air bearing that is engageable without the need to adjust the air bearing's air pressure.

摘要: A transportation system is disclosed that includes a monorail (or other vehicle) along a column-supported rail and a movable weight system that repositions and/or accelerates a movable weight with respect to the movable weight's rail to counterbalance a moment associated with the weight and/or a centrifugal force of the monorail relative to the column, where some embodiments also mitigate resonance. Also disclosed is a linear induction motor (LIM) system that enables the LIM to tilt and thereby remain close to the rail, which mitigates potential thrust losses and/or air losses. Further disclosed is an air bearing system where the air bearing has a compliance and a resilience that minimizes air loss between the rail and the bearing. Additionally disclosed is a rotatable wedge system that essentially expands and/or contracts automatically to maintain an adjacency between two rail portions, where some embodiments also mitigate resonance.

摘要: A transport installation comprising at least one carrier vehicle moving longitudinally in to-and-fro manner along a single running track being guided by two guiding elements each following one of the lateral branches of the track in a crossing area. The carrier vehicle carries two independent gripping mechanisms respectively associated with the two guiding elements and each able to temporarily secure the carrier vehicle in the lateral direction to the associated guiding elements. Such gripping mechanisms constitute on-board devices for selecting the branch associated with its direction of running on entering a crossing area.

摘要: An aircraft which rolls along a guide rail at low speeds and attains aerodynamically airborne flight guided along the rail at high speeds. The guide rail structure includes I beams suspended end to end from spaced apart arches. The guide rails are mounted on the lower ends of the I beam and include flat bottom surfaces and curved upper surfaces that receive the wheels of the aircraft in the low speed operating mode. The upper surfaces are portions of elliptical surfaces to assure proper positioning of the aircraft wheels. In the high speed airborne mode of operation, proximity sensors on the aircraft sense the distance to the guide rail. Controls receive inputs from the sensors and adjust the flight path accordingly.

摘要: A passenger carrying vehicle, supported on air cushions in a guideway, is propelled back and forth in that guideway by a cable. A motor is at one end of the guideway and pulls the cable. The cable is part of a closed loop, having two parts, that extend along the same side of the guideway. Rollers, positioned along that side of the guideway, support each length of the cable. In curved portions of the guideway, where the vehicle is turned left or right, the roller that supports that length to which the car is attached is oriented to support the combined horizontal and vertical loads on the cable as the car is pulled around the turn. The vehicle comprises two cabs. These cabs are pivotally interconnected, allowing them to flex or pivot vertically relative to each other and allowing the vehicle to conform to variations in the contour of the guideway, thereby improving the lift characteristics of the air cushions.

摘要: A land transportation system for a vehicle that is supported and guided by air bearings. The vehicle requires no driver or motorman because a guideway determines the direction of travel, except at switch-points in the network. The vehicle is propelled by a linear synchronous motor when on the guideway. The linear synchronous motor primary is embedded in the guideway. A linear inductor alternator provides on-board electric power. A pair of linear induction motors are used to accelerate the vehicle from a station stop up to guideway synchronous speed, to provide a magnetically attractive element to permit switching in guideway tracks, and to provide dynamic braking when stopping at the destination station. No physical contact is required between the guideway and any part of the vehicle while in motion in order to produce tractive effort or for the generation of electric power on board the vehicle to supply auxiliaries such as a motor driving a fan, interior lights, and vehicle-to-wayside communications equipment.
