A thermal transfer printer has a platen and a thermal head between which are pinched a transfer paper sheet and an ink film, so that the ink is transferred from the ink film to the transfer paper sheet as heat is applied to the transfer paper sheet by the thermal head. The film is supplied by a supply roll and is taken-up by a take-up roll. The thermal head is swingable between a position where it contracts the platen and a position away from the platen. When the thermal head is in the position away from the platen, the distance therebetween is greater than the maximum diameter of the supply roll. A film drum can hold a plurality of films each being constituted by the supply roll and the take-up roll. Swing arms are provided for demounting the supply roll of a selected film from the film drum and for bringing the same to a position away from the film drum, and also for returning the same from this position to the film drum. During the movement of the supply roll between the position in the film drum and the position away from this position, the thermal head is moved away from the platen so as not to hinder the movement of the supply roll.

An image forming device and method are provided which reduce erroneous detection of a border between transfer material areas when forming a new image by using unused portions of partially used transfer material areas. The image forming device forms an image having a first size or a second size which is one-half of the first size or smaller on a recording medium by transferring transfer materials respectively for transfer material areas, while feeding a strip-shaped transfer medium on which the transfer material areas each having the first size and respectively corresponding to the transfer materials are repeatedly arranged in a predetermined sequence in the longitudinal direction thereof. The transfer medium is fed in a forward direction until an unused portion of a subsequent transfer material area adjacent to a used portion of a transfer material area reaches the detection position and thereafter fed in the reverse direction, so that the border between the used and unused portions is detected from the unused portion side, when a second-size image is newly formed by using unused portions in the respective transfer material areas having been used to form a second-size image.

The color signals to be printed by a thermal color transfer printer are processed in order to provide gamma and temperature compensation for nonlinearities in the responses of the colored dyes used in the thermal printing ribbon and also to provide color compensation to correct for any overlap in the spectral response of these colored dyes. Color data signals are sampled and multiplexed to place the main or print color signal, which is determined by the color of the dye in position in front of the thermal head at that instant, in the center of a multiplexed, time-sharing arrangement with the non-print color signals arranged on either side. The multiplexed signal is digitized and used to address a read only memory containing compensation curves to provide both gamma compensation and color compensation, and the compensated signals are adjusted in gray scale magnitude before being pulse width modulated for driving the thermal head to produce the desired color, hard-copy print.

The method further comprises transporting the region of ribbon, by a ribbon transport system, from the printing location towards an imaging location along a ribbon transport path. The method further comprises when a characteristic of the ribbon transport meets a predetermined criterion, obtaining, by an image capture system, a ribbon image of the negative image. The method further comprises processing said ribbon image to generate data indicative of the characteristic of the printed image.
