An apparatus for facilitating the registration of printed matter during the manufacture of bags on fixed-size bag formation equipment, from a continuous web of a substantially non-stretchable material. Printed matter, printed upon the continuous web at regularly-spaced intervals, includes a plurality of periodically spaced reference markers. While a finishing drum propels the continuous web in a direction of flow emanating from a supply of web material, at a substantially constant speed, feed rollers, positioned upstream from the finishing drum, propel the continuous web at a variable speed, relative to the substantially constant speed. As a cutting roller severs a substantially fixed length of web material from a leading edge of the web, at a substantially fixed position relative to an associated reference marker, downstream from the feed rollers, a programmable controller senses the passage of the reference marker past a predetermined position, and further senses the rotational positioning of the cutting roller, comparing these inputs to determine whether the web is being severed at a proper location. Subject to this sensing, a differential transmission adjusts the speed of the feed rollers, to, in turn, vary the position along the continuous web where the cutting roller severs the web in relation to the associated markers.

A bag machine includes a programmed logic controller intermittently actuating a web feed draw roll motor for controlled web feed during the inoperative period of a cycled seal bar. The controller has separate inputs for the seal bar periods and a web length and establishes a control program of a preferred motion profile, with acceleration and deceleration of the fixed rolls to match the bag length to the available time using the total time available, with acceleration to a maximum and deceleration to reference, with or without a constant speed period. The bag length and time is monitored each machine cycle to calculate the next motion profile and permit changes in the bag length without machine shut-down. A programmed registered mode of control responds to a web mark spacing relative to the seal bar. In the registered mode, a photoscanner detects the mark during a constant speed web feed period prior to the end of the available time and actuates the web feed accordingly. If actual draw roll motion differs from the programmed motion profile, a fault signal may shut-down the machine. Manual control and inputs are provided for setup and for manual machine operations. The controller may vary the length of every other bag slightly to spaced hot seams from each other and permits stacking of the bags. A programmed reverse drive withdraws the web slightly from the seal bar to prevent sticking of the web to the seal bar.

A bag machine fabricates plastic bags by transversely cutting and sealing, at regularly spaced preselected locations, an elongate plastic web having graphic material repetitively printed thereon. In operation, the bag machine advances the web by a calculated draw length, and an optical sensor, sensitive to the passage of eyemarks printed in regularly spaced locations on the web, functions to ensure that the web is cut and sealed only at the desired locations. To avoid inaccuracies resulting from a gradual variance between the nominal draw length and the actual distance between eyemarks, a control system monitors the actual distance between eyemarks and sets the nominal draw length to the average actual spacing between eyemarks as measured over a preselectd number of successive eyemarks.

A web of flattened, tubular, heat-sealable bag material travels above and at the speed of a moving belt. Above the belt is a seal shaft which rotates a heated seal bar. The working edge of the seal bar may be adjusted inward and outward relative to its shaft. The edge causes a transverse seal to be made on the web at intervals. A rotary perforating knife is driven at the same speed as the seal shaft and, at a subsequent station, perforates the web proximate the seal. The linear speed of the edge of the seal bar is at the speed of the belt at the time of sealing contact (about 65.degree.). The speed of the seal shaft for the remaining 295.degree. is adjustable and thereby the distance between seals and perforations is adjustable.

According to the present disclosure a method is provided wherein tubular thermoplastic material is intermittently fed between opposed transversely extending seal bars operating in timed relation with the intermittent feeding of the web to sequentially perform cutting and sealing of the web during its period of repose. To insure a clean straight transverse cut, which occurs momentarily before transverse sealing, the web is held under tension between longitudinally spaced draw and feed rolls. Immediately after the web is transversely severed, the seal bars are brought into pressure engagement transversely sealing the web along a margin which will define the bottom of the bag. While the sealed portion of the web is at the sealing station, cooling air is discharged along the sealed portion of the web to effect cooling. Before the web is fed an additional increment, it is momentarily fed rearwardly to avoid the possibility of adherence to the seal bars.

Disclosed herein is an apparatus for effecting longitudinally spaced apart transverse seals with a high degree of linear accuracy in a continuous web of plastic material having a plurality of layers. The apparatus comprises two sets of dual sealer drive rollers for advancing the web past the sealer, and a means for accurately controlling the operation of the sealer and drive rolls. This control means comprises a digital converter operatively in contact with the drive rollers, adapted to convert the angle through which the roller has rotated into a train of electrical pulses. A counter is operatively connected to the converter and is responsive to the train of pulses so that when a predetermined number of these pulses are recorded, an electrical signal is emitted that activates a brake to stop the drive rolls and concomitantly activates a sealer.
