Abstract:
A polyimide film F is brought into an intimate contact with a molding die 3 having a concave molding surface 3a so as to tightly close the open end thereof, and the polyimide film F is bent to deform only by the pressure difference of gas while being heated in a contactless manner. Molding is conducted by applying depressurization for a space 8 on the side of the molding die 3 relative to the polyimide film F while pressurizing the space 9 on the opposite side for the pressure difference at least in the final stage of the bending deformation so as to be in intimate contact with the concave molding surface 3a.
Abstract:
In a method for manufacturing friction linings with or without an intermediate layer by compressing the friction material mixtures in a mold of a press during a pressing process comprising at least one pressing cycle, wherein a press control unit controls a plurality of manipulated variables individually or in combination with each other to attain a given lining property (controlled variable) of the friction linings, it is provided that at least one characteristic value representative of the lining property of the friction linings is measured in a first pressing cycle or in a plurality of pressing cycles, and that the manipulated variables are controlled in dependence on the at least one measured characteristic value of the current pressing cycle, the subsequent pressing cycles and/or the subsequent pressing processes.
Abstract:
A sampling die and press for compaction of a powder sample are disclosed. The die is designed to serve both as a mold for compacting a powder sample into a tablet or caplet and as a container for sampling the powder that is to be compacted. The die is made in two pieces with the top piece of the die having a passage and the bottom piece of the die sealing the bottom opening of the passage to form a mold cavity. The invention also includes a press adapted for compacting a powder sample contained within the mold cavity of a die which serves both as a sampling container for the powder and as a mold for compaction of the powder.
Abstract:
This invention is a compression molded part useful for transportation vehicles and in construction and a process for making compression molded parts. These light weight parts are molded at pressures less than 500 psi (3.5 MPa) and are made from a sheet molding composition or bulk molding composition which incorporates a thixotrope such as fumed silica.
Abstract:
A process of forming a thermal insulation layer (34) includes advancing a multifilament strand of continuous filaments (12) through a nozzle (10) to separate the filaments (16) from each other to form a continuous-filament wool (14), applying a binder to the filaments, placing a charge comprising the wool in a mold (32), and molding the charge to form an insulation layer (34). In a preferred embodiment, the charge (30) further comprises a container, such as a bag (24) formed from a poylmer film. The filaments are preferably prepared from a high-strength, high-temperature resistant glass material. The molded wool is advantageously used to manufacture products, such as catalytic converters (46) wherein the wool is used to thermally insulate the catalytic core element (48).
Abstract:
Activity or craft apparatus and method for simply, inexpensively, and generally instantaneously creating a thin lithophane-like pictorial work that provides a picture or image when light passes through the work from the rear. The work is formed by compressing a formable translucent material. The illustrated apparatus includes a contoured forming surface that is a reverse image of the contoured recessed picture-providing front surface of a desired lithophane-type pictorial work. The translucent material is compressed against the forming surface to form the material into a thin panel that has, at the interface with the forming surface, the contoured recessed picture-producing front surface. In one form the forming surface is mounted on a stamp. The stamp may be hand held or maybe mounted on a press or the like. Thickness limiting stops may be provided to control and limit the final thickness of the compressed finished work. The material may be supported on a suitable surface such as a non-opaque wall of a light-box so that the picture provided by the finished work can be seen by the user as soon as the work is formed and the stamp is removed. In another preferred embodiment, the contoured forming surface may be transparent so that the picture of the work can be seen as soon as the work is formed and backlit, without having to separate the work from the forming surface.
Abstract:
A bag, method of manufacture and process are disclosed for the cryopreservation of thermolabile substances. The bag is characterized as having substantially uniform thickness throughout its length and height. The bag features a radiused peripheral edge wall for stress relief and to provide the constant cross-section. A peripheral flashing circumscribes the radiused edge wall and provides a suitable purchase area for sealing so that the thus formed bag is less susceptible to fracture particularly when exposed to cryogenic temperatures. The uniform thickness of the bag promulgates uniform heat transfer to and from the contents of the bag in relation to any surrounding medium at a different temperature. The bag affords more space for efficient storage and reduces heat invasion into the contents of the bag when a plurality of bags are placed with their larger planar surfaces in contact with each other.
Abstract:
Apparatus and method for the use of a remotely actuated localized pressure and heat apparatus for the consolidation and curing of fiber elements in, structures. The apparatus includes members for clamping the desired portion of the fiber elements to be joined, pressure members and/or heat members. The method is directed to the application and use of the apparatus.
Abstract:
A method of producing a carbon-carbon part having a filamentized composite fiber substrate is provided. A substrate having a plurality of discontinuous filamentized fibers and a binder that binds said filaments together to form a composite substrate is provided, and carbon atoms are deposited onto the filaments at a predetermined temperature so that the binder is removed completely from the filaments and replaced with carbon atoms to from a dense carbon-carbon part.
Abstract:
Apparatus and method reclaim make-up of the type ordinarily supplied in block form by processing broken, unusable random-sized pieces of such make-up into a block of usable make-up of prescribed consistency, size and configuration, by advancing the random-sized pieces through a mesh member of selected mesh size to form intermediate particles of a size appropriate for agglomeration into the block of usable make-up. A measured charge of intermediate particles is established in a compression chamber where the measured charge is compressed by a ram into a mold member to form the block. The mold member preferably includes a tray which selectively is removed to a cosmetic case for ease of carrying and using the reclaimed make-up.
