A torque multiplier apparatus includes an input pinion, a geared torque multiplier mechanism, and an input retainer. The input pinion and the input retainer include first and second identical connectors so that a detent stud can be positioned in either one of the first and second connectors, allowing the torque multiplier to be used for increased torque (and reduced speed) or for increased speed (and lesser torque). A related method includes engaging the driving tool with the first connector and the socket with the second connector to provide an increased torque on a socket to break loose a fastener, and flipping the torque multiplier so that the driving tool engages the second connector and the socket engages the first connector to provide an increased speed of torsional rotation to more quickly remove the fastener from the shaft. The detent stud is torsionally shearable, thus preventing over-stressing and damaging the tool.

Axially extending lobes extend radially from an internally threaded nut and form axial troughs that receive a respective axial cone mounted in the socket of a driver, the cones being rotatably driven against the lobes to apply a threading torque to the nut. At a predetermined torque, an axial outer radial end portion of the material forming the lobe is plastically deformed, but not sheared off, thereby allowing the socket to rotate and the cones to advance against the next respective lobe. The deformed lobe indicates to the user that the nut was properly torqued and the deformed material does not shear off thereby indicating that the nut had not been tampered with. To permit relaxation, a second torquing could be done at a later time.

A screw can be driven home in response to the application of a preselected torque by placing over the head of the screw a tubular first section of a plastic adapter wherein the first section is connected with a polygonal second section by a frangible joint. The joint breaks in response to the application of preselected torque to the second section, and the separated second section then exposes a destructible diaphragm which is provided in the first section and overlies the head of the screw. The head can be engaged by the working end of a tool in response to at least partial destruction of the diaphragm. The first section can be of one piece with the head or it can be affixed thereto by an adhesive or is in mere frictional engagement with the head. Integrity and accessibility of the diaphragm indicate that the screw was driven home in response to the application of preselected torque as well as that the head of the screw was not tampered with subsequent to separation of the second section from the first section of the adapter.

A friction ring is provided between the housing and the support frame coupled to the inner socket to effect frictional engagement therebetween. A definite axial tension is available by rotating the outer socket, i.e., the nut, with the inner socket in a fixed state. Even if the bolt should rotate about its axis, the support frame slips, whereby the tightening device is prevented from turning around in its entirety.
