摘要: A method of making a cutting tap includes: providing an elongate tap body having an axial forward end, an axial rearward end and a central longitudinal axis; securing the axial rearward end of the tap body in a grinding machine; and forming in the axial forward end of the tap body a correction grind and a main flute in one continuous grinding operation. A cutting tap made by the invention is also provided.

摘要: A low torque tap includes a shank portion with a driving square and a thread cutting portion. The thread cutting portion includes a threaded body with one or more asymmetrical straight flutes that run essentially parallel to a longitudinal axis of the tap. The thread cutting portion also includes one or more short angular flutes or spiral points and a tapered chamfer. For tapping steel alloys, the cutting edges of the straight flutes and the spiral points have a rake or chordal hook angle of between about 5 and 15 degrees. For tapping ferrous materials, the tap is made from molybdenum-enriched high-speed steel and may be coated with a wear-resistant, friction-reducing layer. A second, outer layer, such as molybdenum disulfide, may be applied over the wear-reducing layer for further reduction in friction. For tapping non-ferrous materials, the tap may be coated with a layer of material containing carbon.

摘要: A cutting tap includes a body having an axial forward end and an axial rearward end and a central longitudinal axis. The body has a fluted section at the axial forward end. The fluted section includes a chamfered fluted section extending from the axial forward end of the body and terminating at a first full cutting thread. The chamfered fluted section includes a first cutting thread located a first distance from the axial forward end of the body, and a second cutting thread located a second distance from the axial forward end of the body. The second distance is greater than the first distance. The chamfered fluted section is shaped such that a thickness of a section of material removed by the second cutting thread is smaller than a thickness of a section of material removed by the first cutting thread. A method of making the cutting tap is also disclosed.

摘要: A self-drilling and self-tapping fastener, particularly suitable for use in relatively thick metal, which is made from a headed blank by a method including pressing into the cylindrical free end of the blank a pair of straight flutes, by dies which are closed together on a line which is acutely angled to both the leading and trailing walls of the flutes. The flutes are inclined in opposite directions relative to the screw axis and are positioned on opposite sides of the screw. The tip is machined off to a V-form, to provide a ridge angularly advanced about the axis of the screw relative to the cutting edges of the flutes. Further machining may remove metal from the sides of the drill point between the flutes to provide flats and the drill point may be turned to a circular cross-section to provide sharp well-supported cutting edges for improved wear resistance. The drill point may taper overall, being of smallest diameter adjacent the threaded fastener shank.

摘要: A method of producing a nitrided cut tap that includes a nitrogen diffusion layer. The method includes (a) a nitriding step for forming the nitrogen diffusion layer in which nitrogen atoms contained in an atmospheric gas are diffused from a surface of a base material of the cut tap under heat, such that the nitrogen diffusion layer has a thickness ranging from 10 μm to 30 μm; and (b) a honing step for rounding a cutting edge portion by colliding abrasive particles against a local part of the cutting edge portion of the base material of the cut tap that has been subjected to the nitriding step, such that a difference between a thickness of the nitrogen diffusion layer in the cutting edge portion and a thickness of the nitrogen diffusion layer in flank and rake surfaces sandwiching the cutting edge portion, is not larger than 5 μm.

Due to this configuration, rubbing in a state where the partial thread is pressed against the inner circumferential surface of the pilot hole can be suppressed, and as a result, chipping of the partial thread can be prevented.

摘要: A relief thread grinding machine for making screw taps wherein a workpiece 10 is clamped to a resiliently mounted body 5 of a longitudinally adjustable sled 1. The body carries a follower wheel 17 which bears on a cam roller 15 rotatably mounted on the sled. The surface of the cam roller is eccentrically lobed so that when it is axially moved varying oscillation strokes of the body 5 are produced. The cam roller can be axially adjusted as needed during the grinding process so that the amount of relief grind can be changed. In this manner it is possible to provide the conical thread on the lead end of a tap with a different relief grind than the generally cylindrical and posteriorly weak conical thread on the guide end of the tap.
