Abstract: A method for welding multiple workpieces together includes applying a force to the multiple workpieces, generating ultrasonic vibration, transferring the ultrasonic vibration to the multiple workpieces to breakdown an oxide layer, generating an electric current, transmitting the electric current to heat up the workpieces, and synchronizing the ultrasonic and resistance heating operations. A welding system includes an ultrasonic vibration unit that generates an ultrasonic vibration and transfers the ultrasonic vibration to multiple workpieces to breakdown an oxide layer, a resistance heating unit that generates an electric current and transmits the electric current to heat up the workpieces, a workpiece mount that includes electrodes configured to receive the generated current and/or clamp the multiple workpieces during a welding process, and a controller configured to synchronize an operation of the ultrasonic vibration unit and an operation of a resistance heating unit.

Abstract: A welding electrode for an electric resistance welding process. The welding electrode includes a body extending along a center axis and terminating axially at a weld face for contacting a work face. The weld face defines a center along the axis and defines an outer edge spaced radially from the center. A plurality of senates are defined along the weld face. Each of the serrates projects axially away from the weld face and extends radially from the center axis to the outer edge of the weld face. A higher density of the plurality of serrates is formed proximate to the center axis than proximate to the outer circumference of the weld face. Methods for using the welding electrode and forming the senates on the welding electrode are also provided.

Abstract: Apparatus and method are disclosed for welding metal members by means of vibratory energy. Reliability of such welding apparatus is improved by provision of an anvil designed for regulated response to excitation by an ultrasonically-powered sonotrode. The anvil is mounted in an assembly which contributes appropriate support, restraint and isolation.

Abstract: A spot welding apparatus adapted particularly for joining aluminum workpieces utilizes a twisting or vibrating motion to break up oxides on the workpiece surface for improved welding and increased welding tip life. In one embodiment, a vibration inducing device is fixed to the electrode holder of a spot welding apparatus for vibrating the electrode tip during welding. In another embodiment, a camming mechanism rotates the electrode tip of the spot welding head in response to the spot welding head contacting the workpiece surface. The electrode tip rotates or twists in a limited arc after the tip contacts the workpiece to break up oxides on the workpiece surface. The electrode tip, upon removal from the workpiece surface, reverses its rotation for subsequent spot welding and to minimize the possibility of the electrode sticking to the workpiece.

Abstract: A pulsed heat hybrid semiconductor die bonding apparatus utilizing a pair of heating electrodes which bracket a die collet and contact the substrate area immediately adjacent each side of the die or chip to be bonded. A heating pulse of a predetermined magnitude and duration produces localized substrate heating via a discharge of current to the metalization under the chip. A conductivity monitor connected to the electrodes indicates the quality of the electrical contact of the heating electrodes with the substrate. Simultaneous with the substrate heating current pulse, a low frequency, unidirectional mechanical scrubbing motion is applied to the arm holding the die collet. The arm is supported in the apparatus by means of a flexure type of mounting. The combination of heating current applied to the substrate in pulses with scrubbing action precisely controls the heating and eutectic bonding of the substrate and chip, preventing subsequent unbonding or heat damage to the semiconductor die. The bonding arm mechanism accepts quickly interchangeable, floating die collet tools.
