Abstract: An Internet-based disease monitoring system may include a miniaturized disease sensor device, which is coupled to a sensor, such as a spirometer, and a transmitter configured to transmit raw input signals from the sensor to a mobile device as cellular voice or text data for forwarding to a remote server. A remote server may be coupled to the network-based disease sensor device to provide analysis of raw input signals from the sensor. The remote server may be able to provide various services for grouping or handling functions relating to such input signals. A service may provide the ability to aggregate input signals from multiple sensors coupled to sensor devices and provide predictive modeling or statistical analysis, which may then be used to adjust future input signals. A service may also contain instructions how to handle billing based on usage of the network-based disease sensor device.

Abstract: An airflow perturbation device for measuring respiratory resistance of a patient breathing with the use of a ventilator comprises a sealed housing having a first port and a second port each configured to couple to a ventilator hose, a perturbation mechanism to periodically alter air flow resistance between the first port and the second port, a pneumotachometer comprising a flow sensor to measure airflow between the first port and the second port, a pressure sensor to measure a difference in air pressure between the first port and the second port, and a computing system comprising at least one processor configured to receive data from the flow sensor and pressure sensor. The computing system determines an airflow resistance based on the received data. Embodiments of the present invention further include a method and computer program product for measuring respiratory resistance of a ventilated patient in substantially the same manners described above.

Abstract: A portable hand-held spirometer is disclosed for use in taking respiratory tests and storing and displaying test results. The configuration of the spirometer includes handgrips that are positioned to ensure that the user is properly positioned to provide maximum breathing required for valid test results to be obtained. The spirometer also includes a progressively illuminated indicator that can be viewed by the user during a test to provide an indication in real-time to the user of the expected/desired duration of the exhalation or inhalation test. The indicator is completely illuminated only when the measured accumulated volume of air passing through the spirometer equals a predicted volume determined based on the age, gender, height, weight and ethnicity of the user stored in the spirometer. The structures and arrangement of a turbine assembly and sensors is also disclosed. Further, a method of receiving, storing and displaying information on the spirometer via a color touch screen display is also disclosed.

Abstract: An endoscope system includes an illumination unit which includes a modulation section configured to control a visible light source so that visible light from the visible light source is subjected to intensity modulation in a predetermined pattern, and emits modulated visible light as illumination light, a detection section configured to detect the modulated visible light, and a determination section configured to determine whether an insertion portion of an endoscope is present in an object based on a detection result of the detection section. The illumination unit is arranged outside the object, and the detection section is arranged at the insertion portion.
