Abstract: A method for making a growing medium includes a step of combining tree bark and/or wood components together to form an initial composition; heating the initial composition to a temperature greater than about 149° C. under steam in a pressurized vessel; processing the initial composition through a refiner with a plurality of opposing disks to obtain the fibrous growing medium, the refiner separating fibers from each other; wherein the growing medium has total porosity of 88 volume % or more.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are soil amendments, generally in the form of coated perlite compositions, as well as methods of making and using the same. The disclosed compositions, methods, and systems provide for various beneficial enhancements to plants growth and soil health, and may decrease costs, for example by avoiding the need for multiple treatments. The presently disclosed compositions, methods, and systems also aid in prolonging release of plant nutrition into the soil (including silica), enhancing aeration, water retention, and drainage, resisting soil compaction, providing for pest and insect control, etc. In many embodiments, the disclosed coated perlite composition is a sterile composition, that is lightweight, and has a low dust content, which may provide for efficient and low-cost handling and transport of products comprising same. The disclosed coated perlite compositions comprise perlite particles having a coating of a mixture of diatomaceous earth phosphorous and may also include one or more of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the coating.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a woody plant seeding formulation for phytoremediation, ecological restoration, land reclamation, environmental rehabilitation, revitalization, revegetation, and reforestation of disturbed and degraded lands. The seeding formulation includes a mix of woody trees or shrubs seeds, organic mulch, beneficial microbial populations, mineral fertilizer, adhesive, absorbent polymer, and water. The present disclosure also provides for pre-treatment of surfaces by spreading or mixing with organic biomass with the surface. Methods of preparing and applying the seeding formulation and pre-treatment are also disclosed.

Abstract: A self watering bottle planter insert allows a regular bottle to be transformed into a hydroponic planter. The self watering bottle planter insert is insertable into a bottle and removes the need for a separate source of nutrients. The planter uses composite media with an enriched substrate layered beneath a more standard hydroponic growth media to add nutrients to the water for the life cycle of the plant. Also provided is a substrate assembly for use in a bottle planter assembly.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a cultivation method for the rapid propagation of Davidia involucrata winter buds. The method includes the following steps: (1) collecting winter buds of Davidia involucrata as explants; (2) disinfecting and sterilizing; (3) primary culture of the winter buds; (4) propagation cultivating; (5) cultivating of the strong seedlings; (6) cultivating roots; (7) acclimatization and transplanting; (8) water and fertilizer management. The method of the present invention can effectively promote the artificial propagation of Davidia involucrata and improve the survival rate thereof.
