摘要： A process for forming flexible cutting line for use in rotary vegetation trimmers of the type having two or more monofilament lines mounted on a common spool. The line produced by the process of the present invention defines two monofilament strands joined together in a side-by-side relationship by a severable bond. Each strand defines a plurality of circumferentially spaced and outwardly projecting vegetation cutting edges thereon, two of the edges on one of the strands being in parallel contact with two of the edges on the other strand so as to define a pair of parallel readily severable welds bonding the strands together in a side-by-side disposition. The line forming process includes the steps of extruding the strands such that two of the edges on one strand are in proximate disposition and opposed parallel alignment with two of the edges on the other strand, directing the extruding strands together in edge-to-edge parallel contact along the opposed edges such that an enclosed space is defined between the strands so that the heat in the strands can create a positive pressure in the enclosed area to prevent inseparable fusion of the strands. The strands are then directed in edge-to-edge contact into a cooling quench bath, and pulled through the bath to effect crystallization and bonding together of the strands in an adjacent disposition along two readily severable parallel welds defined by the contacting edges.

The blade is torch cut or cast from thick metal in a generally L shape to have any desired angle between its stem and floor, in the preferred embodiment the angle is ninety degrees to insure a close cut of brush. The thicker metal will cut thicker brush. A resharpenable cutting edge is also torch cut or cast on the floor of the blade making the cutting edge of the blade resharpenable and renewable by repeat torch cutting. An elliptically shaped attaching hole is also torch cut or cast in the stem of the blade for attaching the blade to a hanger to then be attached to the shaft of the flail cutter. This attaching hole can also be torch cut or cast into any desired shape. A method of providing a blade for a flail type brush cutting machine is also disclosed.

摘要： This is a large rotatable cutter head primarily useful in masticating vegetation ranging from grasses to large trees. The inventive cutter head is typically mounted on an articulating arm on a tractor or tread-based vehicle. Depending upon the size of the arm and its maneuverability, the cutter head may be used to cut and grind vegetation variously from the ground surface to many feet off the ground. The rotatable cutter head assembly includes a number of rotating cutters mounted inside the periphery of the assembled drum and that spin freely outside the diameter of that drum and, upon contact with vegetation, rotate into the drum assembly. The invention includes combinations of the cutter head with the support vehicle or articulating arm and methods of using the cutter head.

摘要： A crop chopper for an agricultural machine has a rotor having a plurality of fingers displaceable on rotation of the rotor along the passage, and respective blades interleaved with the fingers and each having a front end pivoted about a horizontal axis and a rear edge formed with a rearwardly open notch so that crop pressed by the fingers between the blades is chopped and moved rearward along the passage. A rocker is pivotal about a horizontal axis and respective actuator plates juxtaposed with the rear edges of the blades are each formed with a rearwardly projecting arm. Respective abutment bodies on the plates are displaceable toward and away from the respective blades and respective springs braced between the bodies and the respective plates urge the bodies forward toward the blades. The plates are each pivotal about a horizontal axis between an active position with the respective body engaged against the respective rear edge and an inactive position with the respective body disengaged from the respective rear edge. Respective springs braced between the plates and the rocker pivot the plates on the rocker about the respective plate axis in a direction pulling the bodies away from the blades and pivot the blade arms downward. An abutment beam extends below the plates, and at least one actuator engaged with the rocker can pivot down the rocker and thereby press the rear arms against the abutment beam and bring the plates into the active positions.

The control apparatus preferably includes a clutch cable biased to a clutch-disengaged position, a first handle engageable with the clutch cable for shifting the cable to a clutch-engaged position, a second movable handle for releasably retaining the clutch cable in the clutch-engaged position, a spring for yieldably biasing the second handle to a position wherein the clutch cable is released from the second handle means, and a shiftable detent that prevents shifting movement of the first handle means when the second handle means is in its normal, biased position. Two control assemblies of the type disclosed may be used in tandem on lawnmowers having a clutch-engaged blade and a clutch-engaged ground drive.

The control apparatus preferably comprises a shiftable lever and a separate, shiftable "dead man" bail, along with an operating mechanism including a coupler positioned on the lever and movable into engagement with an end fitting on the actuating cable by means of a plate shiftable with the bail; when the coupler is initially positioned by movement of the bail, the lever is shifted to move the cable and thereby engage the clutch, whereupon the cable is releasably locked in position by interengagement of respective shoulders on the cable fitting and plate. Subsequent release of the bail releases the locking shoulders, thereby disengaging the clutch.
