    摘要: Processes for high speed machining of workpiece materials using high performance tools with prolonged tool life and improved surface finish are provided by vibrating the tool and/or the workpiece at a frequency greater than the frequency of shear localization in the primary shear zone or chip segmentation occurring in the absence of tool vibration, with an amplitude sufficient to break up the tool-chip atomic contact, thereby decreasing the tool-chip contact length through decreasing the tool-chip contact time, thereby suppressing accelerated chemical tool wear caused by dissolution of the tool into the workpiece by nanocrystalline grain boundary diffusion and grain boundary sliding mechanisms by preventing shear localization associated with nanocrystalline grain formation in the primary shear zone of the chip, and suppressing oxidation wear of the tool by preventing segmentation of the chip.

    摘要: There is provided a roll surface machining method and apparatus for using a cutting tool to carry out ultra-precision machining in the surface of a roll with a reduced amount of data. The apparatus and method for roll surface machining includes setting a machining start position of a cutting tool with respect to the surface of the roll by C-axis indexing of the roll and positioning of the roll in the axial direction (Z-axis direction) both with respect to the cutting tool. Also the cutting tool and the roll are moved relative to each other in the axial direction of the roll by position control using C-Z axis interpolation, thereby forming a three-dimensional pattern in the surface of the roll.

    摘要: A hollow turning device comprises a tool handle, a cutting bar extending from one end of the tool handle having a longitudinal axis and a cross section at least a portion of which is non-circular, and a cutting tool disposed at a distal end of the cutting bar. A tool rest is disposed adjacent the work piece. A torque arrestor has a pair of spaced apart cooperating rollers between which the cutting bar extends, the cooperating rollers being spaced apart to fittingly receive and restrain the cutting bar to allow motion of the cutting bar between the cooperating rollers to facilitate motion of the cutting tool within the hollow to shape the inside of the work piece, wherein the non-circular portion of the cutting bar cross section prevents vertical movement and rotation of the cutting bar along its longitudinal axis when the cutting tool engages the work piece.

The device is designed to fit on a commercial diamond turning machine and can adjust the cutting tool position in three orthogonal directions with sub-micrometer resolution. In particular, the tool holder adjusts the tool position using three flexure-based mechanisms, with two flexure mechanisms adjusting the lateral position of the tool to align the tool with the B-axis, and a third flexure mechanism adjusting the height of the tool. Preferably, the flexures are driven by manual micrometer adjusters. In this manner, this tool holder simplifies the process of setting a tool with sub-μm accuracy, to substantially reduce the time required to set the tool.
