Abstract: A lock ring and fastener which is manufactured with the lock ring connected thereto by metal tabs or a metal strip of the same parent material as the fastener. It is intended to be installed in a threaded bore of a workpiece as an insert or stud.The lock ring is displaced and the metal tabs or strip is broken by a special installation tool. This tool flattens any rough edges that remain on the insert or stud after installation. The internal grooves of the lock ring engage the external teeth of the insert or stud. The external teeth of the lock ring bite into the workpiece and by coacting with the external teeth of the insert or stud assist in preventing rotation of the insert or stud in the workpiece.

Abstract: A fastener apparatus which can be formed by conventional punch press machinery and which is hardened so that the fastener may be driven into metallic structures such as structural steel beams and the like using a conventional hammer or a power operated nailing gun. The apparatus includes a flat body having a penetrating head at one end connected to the body by a reduced neck and such penetrating head is smaller in width than the width of the body. The portion of the body adjacent to the neck is provided with an overlying ledge which forces material into the area adjacent to the neck to form a mechanical lock which resists withdrawal and prevents rotation of the fastener within the material.

Abstract: A fastening device comprises an electrically conductive sheet metal nut element which may function to complete electrical connections and a plastic, electrically insulating cap member which covers the nut element. Even though plastic material such as that from which the cap member is made is pliable and exhibits a certain amount of plastic flow or "creep," the cap member and nut element are configured so that they can be tightly assembled to transmit high torques through the cap member to the nut element. Specifically, the nut element is formed with a web portion, which is generally perpendicular to the fastening device axis, and a stud-engaging configuration associated with the web portion. A cylindrical section is formed at the periphery of the web portion to extend in the direction of the device axis and has at least one pair of circumferentially opposing wings which project outwardly away from the axis. The cap member is formed in one piece to complement the nut element and includes a cover and a nut element embracing skirt formed at the periphery of the cover to extend in the direction of the device axis. The skirt is shaped and sized to fit in tight conformity about the cylindrical nut element section so that the wings bite into the inner skirt wall and thereby prevent relative nut element-cap member rotation. Further, when assembled, the margin of the cap member skirt opposite the cover is flush with the nut element web portion so that working loads on the nut element do not tend to dislodge it from the cap member.

Abstract: A rotation resistant nut having an internally threaded nut body and having a portion of the exterior surface of the nut body provided with an irregular configuration. The rotation resistant nut is adapted to be used as an insert-type nut and upon installation of the nut into a round hole in a workpiece having a diameter smaller than the major diameter of the nut, the workpiece deforms the nut body so that the internal threads of the nut become distorted to create a prevailing torque locking characteristic between the internal threads of the nut and a cooperating threaded male fastener.

Abstract: A metallic fastener or insert of the type adapted to thread itself into a recess formed in a plastic work piece has a multiplicity of uniformly angularly spaced, longitudinally extending flutes, each of which is formed with a flat bottom surface and with flat side walls angularly related to define between them an included angle of about 60.degree. . The flutes are each formed to a depth greater than the root diameter of the external threads of the insert, that is, the flat bottom surface of each flute lies in a plane tangential to an imaginary circle of a diameter smaller than the root diameter of the external thread of the insert.In accordance with the invention, the opposite end portions of the insert are tapered frustro-conically. Abstract: A cable bonding assembly and method of installing the same on a shielded cable without need for slitting either the shield or sheath. An inner shoe is forcibly inserted edgewise directly beneath the shield until a threaded opening therein registers with aligned openings through the shield and sheath spaced inwardly from the ends thereof. The threaded end of a clamping shank is then screwed into the threaded opening through the aligned opening and employed along with retainer means thereon to hold an outer shoe clamped against the exterior of the sheath and the inner shoe clamped against the shield. Sharp burrs associated with the inner shoe penetrate into and assure multiple positive contacts with the shield. Grounding of the bonding assembly may be by conductors secured to the shank, or to a second threaded shank fixed to one of said shoes, or by a metal clamp embracing the bonding assembly and a grounded metallic support for the cable end.

Abstract: A method for rapidly attaching pierce nuts to a sheet which does not require completely new tooling for different designs of sheets. The nuts are made from a strip of metal and are complete except that they are left attached to one another and are thus predictably oriented. They are supplied to the attaching mechanism in rolled strip form. The attaching mechanism is a standardized unit enclosed in a single housing which automatically locates the end nut of the strip over the workpiece sheet, severs the nut from the strip, pierces the sheet with the nut and clinches the nut to the sheet while, if desired, embossing the sheet at the opening made therein by the nut. As many such standarized nut attaching units may be used simultaneously in a single punch press as are required, the tooling to be used comprising mainly means for locating the units relative to the sheet in the punch press.
