Abstract: The method disclosed herein is suitable for forming a fastener having a panel receiving re-entrant groove, such as a piercing nut or fastener having a central pilot portion and a surrounding groove which is restricted at the open end. The method includes impacting the pilot or piercing face of nut blank with a punch having an annular protrusion forming the central pilot portion and a surrounding groove having parallel side walls. The grooved end of the fastener is then forced into a tapered die opening, deforming the outer side wall of the groove inwardly to provide a restricted or re-entrant groove opening. In the disclosed method, the nut blank is first deformed in a hexgonal die and the outer groove wall is also hexagonal. The nut blank is then pierced, through the pilot portion.

Abstract: Heat treating apparatus which includes a heat treating furnace, a chute at the back of the furnace, and a quench bath at the bottom of the chute. The chute has at least one opening in it located at a level above the quench bath, through which a purging gas is injected, and at a slightly higher level the chute has at least one opening in it through which purging gas, furnace atmosphere gas, quench bath fumes and other contaminants are exhausted. Abstract: A method of making a laminated nut or nut clip having a threaded bore. The lamina may be formed by spirally rolling the end of a strip, flattening the spiral roll, piercing the lamina and forming the threaded bore. The threaded bore is formed by piercing the lamina through one face and then extruding an integral barrel through the pierced hole from the opposite face of the lamina. The barrel is then defined by a plurality of nested cone-shaped portions formed in the lamina in the extrusion step.

Abstract: A nut formed of a plurality of laminae relatively fixed at their opposite ends, in face to face relation, having an integral barrel portion surrounding a threaded bore. Abstract: A method of securing a nut to a panel, including deforming the panel into a groove or recess in the nut by advancing a punch against the panel face opposed to the nut, deforming the panel edge beneath and against an inclined outer wall of the nut groove and further advancing the punch into a tool receiving recess in the bottom of the groove, beyond the panel edge. In one disclosed embodiment, the nut pierces its own hole in the panel. In the other embodiment, the panel is pre-pierced and the nut is clinched to the panel.
