Each of the first and second telescoping members includes four interconnected sections in telescoping relationship. A lock collar is provided on each of the first and second telescoping members so as to secure the telescoping sections in fixed position.

A key lock (63) or a removable pad lock (64) is used to secure the device and an alarm unit (90) is activated when an unauthorized removal of the device is taking place. A carrying handle (54) permits ease of handling and a switch or the like with openable electrical contacts (72) deenergizes the vehicle's brake light when the device is installed.

The brakes of a towed vehicle can be applied remotely responsive to braking of the towing vehicle. An air compressor driven by the motor of the towing vehicle can supply compressed air to a compressed air storage tank with a pneumatic line extending from the compressed air storage tank rearwardly to a braking assembly which is positioned in the passenger compartment of the towed vehicle. The braking assembly is adjustable and includes a rod positioned between the steering wheel and the brake pedal of the towed vehicle and is secured to both. A pneumatic control device is connected to the pneumatic line to receive a signal therethrough to actuate the braking assembly through an actuation device such as a pneumatic piston to exert pressure to expand the length of the bar and apply the brakes of the towed vehicle. An air release valve in the bar assembly can exhaust air from the pneumatic piston responsive to cessation of compressed air being supplied through the pneumatic line to facilitate immediate release of the brakes of the towed vehicle.

A vehicle foot pedal actuator device is adapted for both depressing a vehicle foot pedal and returning the pedal to its normal position. The actuator device includes a variable length extension assembly adapted to be connected between the vehicle driver's seat and the pedal to be actuated. A drive arrangement is adapted for extending and retracting the extension assembly, and a control system having a moveable remote control unit is adapted for controlling the operation of the actuator from various positions around the vehicle where maintenance and repair work may be performed. The extension assembly preferably includes an elongated extension housing tube adapted to receive an elongated extension member that may be extended and retracted in a telescoping fashion to vary the length of the assembly. The actuator device also includes a connecting arrangement for connecting the extension assembly between the foot pedal to be actuated and the vehicle driver's seat to enable the extension assembly to exert both a pulling and pushing force to work the vehicle pedal. The preferred connecting arrangement includes a seat belt connecting member adapted to receive a portion of the vehicle driver's seat belt so as to hold one end of the extension assembly securely against the front of the vehicle driver's seat. The opposite end of the extension assembly includes a pedal connector for connecting to a particular pedal to impart both a pushing and pulling force to the pedal. Also, in the preferred form of the invention, the control system includes an indicator for providing an indication of the operational status of the device at the remote control unit. The indicator allows the operator to know at the remote location if the extension member is being extended, retracted, or is stationary with respect to the extension housing.

The apparatus includes a test stand that is rigidly secured in the vehicle at a position proximate the accelerator and brake pedals for supporting accelerator and brake pedal actuators. The accelerator actuator includes a threaded shaft that is rotatably driven by a motor and engaged by a pawl so as to move axially as it is rotated, the threaded shaft being drivably coupled to the accelerator pedal so as to depress and release the accelerator pedal in accordance with the rotation of the threaded shaft. A solenoid is provided for disengaging the pawl from the threaded shaft and the threaded shaft is spring biased so as to release the accelerator pedal when the pawl is disengaged from the threaded shaft by the solenoid. The brake pedal actuator includes a pneumatic cylinder containing a piston that is drivably coupled to the brake pedal of the vehicle so as to depress and release the brake pedal of the vehicle in accordance with the introduction of a pressurized fluid to the pneumatic cylinder.

The clutch depressing tool includes a bar extending between the steering wheel and the clutch pedal. The bar has a first end and a second end. A clutch pedal engaging bracket is fixedly mounted to the first end of the bar. The clutch pedal engaging bracket has a hook portion thereon, which opens away from the bar. The hook portion is adapted to rest over an upper edge of the clutch pedal. A steering wheel engaging bracket for resting the second end of the bar on the steering wheel has a generally J-shaped configuration. The steering wheel engaging bracket has a long portion and a hook portion. The long portion has a first bore therein. The first bore has a shape adapted to slidably receive a portion of the bar. A plurality of notches for holding the steering wheel bracket is in the bar. A locking means for locking the steering wheel bracket in selective position on the bar is mounted on the steering wheel engaging bracket. The locking means is adapted to selectively engage the notches.
