    Abstract: The invention relates to a process for drying sludge having the following steps: a) applying a sludge having a dry matter content of 15% to 30% to a floor of a drying hall (10), or sludge already present, b) predrying the sludge in the drying hall (10), wherein the sludge is mixed, c) introducing at least a part of the predried sludge into a heated thermal dryer (12), wherein the sludge introduced in each case into the thermal dryer (12) is replaced in the drying hall (10), by carrying out the step a), by a sludge having a dry matter content of 15% to 30% which then likewise passes through step b), d) drying the sludge in the thermal dryer (12) to a dry matter content of 80% to 95%, wherein air (14) taking up moisture from the sludge flows over or through the sludge, wherein the air (14) is brought to a temperature in a range from 70° C. to 160° C., or wherein, by heating the sludge, water vapor is liberated from the sludge, wherein the sludge, after achieving the dry matter content of 80% to 95%, is discharged from the thermal dryer (12), wherein the sludge discharged from the thermal dryer in each case is replaced by predried sludge by carrying out step c), which predried sludge then likewise passes through step d), e) passing the air (14) heated in step d), or the water vapor through a first region of a heat exchanger (17), through which ambient air (16) passes in a second region, wherein the air (14) heated in step d) or the water vapor releases heat to the ambient air (16), with condensation of the moisture present in the heated air or in the water vapor, wherein the heated air (14) or the water vapor is cooled to a temperature in the range from 10° C. to 60° C., and the ambient air (16) is heated to a temperature at most 40 K above the ambient temperature and the former temperature is at most 50° C., and f) promoting the predrying according to step b) by introducing the ambient air (18) heated in step e) into the drying hall (10), in such a manner that the ambient air (16) flows onto or over the surface of the sludge applied to the floor of the drying hall (10).

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the simultaneous storage and drying of sewage sludge, comprising the following steps: a) mechanically dewatering the sewage sludge down to a dry substance concentration of 10 to 35 percent; b) applying the dewatered sewage sludge to a floor of a greenhouse-type drying hall in which a transparent building envelope forms the roof over the floor; c) drying the sewage sludge using solar radiation that radiates into the drying hall; d) mechanically dewatering additional sewage sludge down to a dry substance concentration of 10 to 35 percent; e) introducing the dewatered additional sewage sludge into the drying hall and mixing the additional sewage sludge with the sewage sludge already in the drying hall; f) drying said mixture using solar radiation that radiates into the drying hall; and g) evacuating the mixture from the drying hall or repeating steps d) to f), wherein in step e), the additional sewage sludge is mixed with the mixture in the drying hall rather than with the sewage sludge in the drying hall.

    Abstract: A drying apparatus includes a hollow main body having an inside defining a water collection zone located at a lower portion thereof, a heat convection zone located above the water collection zone, and a drying zone located above the heat convection zone for drying an article to be dried. Thus, the drying apparatus produces hot air that is formed by a heat convection effect so as to dry the article placed in the drying zone efficiently, thereby enhancing the drying effect of the drying apparatus. In addition, the pivotable covers are pivoted outward to open the drying zone to allow the solar rays directly entering the main body so as to dry the article placed in the drying zone by the solar rays.

    Abstract: The invention is a distributed airways airflow dryer system for coffee beans and other such bulk crops. The interior volume or container of the dryer or dehydrator system that holds the bulk crops, is filled with an airways network structure that provides uniformly distributed open wall airflow passageways in the bulk crops. The airflow passages communicate with airflow openings in the walls or bottom of the container, to divide and admit the drying airflow into and through the full volume of the bulk crops as a large number of individual airstreams. Corrugated, ribbed, or cross-ribbed airflow plates are preferred embodiments that provide narrow open grooves or channels that expose the beans or kernels of the bulk crop directly to the airflow. This results in faster drying and greater uniformity of the drying effect on the full volume of the bulk crops. The airflow can be readily reversed through the system to further distribute the accelerated drying effects of the distributed airflow on the volume of bulk crops.

    Abstract: An energy-saving type solar-heated drying apparatus for drying various types of matter, which utilizes a drying room surrounded by a solar-heat transmitting/absorbing wall. In the drying room, the matter is deposited on an elongated drying cage while exposed to a dry hot air produced by the solar heat. During drying treatment of the matter, the matter is moved from a supply side of the drying cage to a discharge side of the same in a longitudinal direction of the drying cage by means of a stirring/mixing transporter by which the matter is stirred/mixed while moved from the supply side to the discharge side of the drying cage. The dry hot air produced in the drying room under the influence of the solar heat is drawn into the drying cage, passing through the matter deposited thereon so as to evenly and effectively dry the matter.

    Abstract: Fabrics are dried by tumbling the fabrics in a drying chamber into which hot air is introduced. The hot air is formed by passing ambient air through a solar heater to heat the air to a first temperature, and then further heating the air with a second heater such as a burner. The burner can be one which burns a fuel in the presence of combustion air. The combustion air can be a portion of the air that is passed through the solar heater.After drying the fabrics by this method, the drying zone can be cooled and the fabrics can be further dried by passing air through the solar heater, and then without further heating the air that has passed through the solar heater, introducing the air to the drying chamber.

    Abstract: An enclosure for drying and storing grain or crops utilizing solar energy wherein an entire structural side (wall or roof) is of transparent material. An inner wall is positioned adjacent the transparent wall and an absorbent material is positioned intermediate the transparent and inner wall. The inner and outer walls form a duct for the passage of air past the absorbent material. The heated air is directed to a plenum/manifold which in turn is connected to a tubing having a multiplicity of perforations (ports) therein. The tubing extends back and forth in an array over the entire floor of the enclosure. The air passing upwardly through the ports in the tubing array provides a uniform distribution of heated air to the crops placed in the enclosure.
