摘要: Methods and apparatus for enabling a line card to support multiple ports, multiple rates, and multiple protocols within an optical network system are disclosed. According to one aspect of the present invention, a line card that is suitable for incorporation into one of a multi-slot broadband digital cross-connect system or a multiservice provisioning platform includes a first port and a plurality of devices. The first port is arranged to be provisioned to accept an input signal which may be one of a signal of a first protocol and a signal of a second protocol. The plurality of devices being arranged to process the input signal to create an output signal which has a SONET payload. In one embodiment, the signal of the first protocol is an OC-n signal and the signal of the second protocol is a Gigabit Ethernet signal.

摘要: A traffic recovery mechanism for communication networks uses a layer-1 adaptive rate protection scheme that compliments layer-3 restoration mechanisms. The protection scheme allocates less bandwidth to the traffic during a protection switch than during the normal operating conditions. This scheme allows the network to roll off more gracefully from the perspective of the applications routed through it. Rate adaptation is effected by a new interface between the data equipment and the transport network, which switches information transfer rate between two or more predetermined levels.

摘要: Data frames are converted to a format suitable for transparent, flexible concatenated transport such that a network element not supporting flexible concatenation may transparently pass the data frames. Flexible concatenation involves nonstandard data frames such as an STS-4c or an STS-Nc in which the time slots do not occupy rigidly defined contiguous time slots. In transparent flexible concatenation, the pointer from the parent time slot is used for each of the child time slots and the concatenation identifier is set to indicate no concatenation. In this way, the concatenated data appears to be a series of conventional STS-1s such that pointer processing may be successfully accomplished even by a network element not capable of handling non-standard concatenations. A downstream receive framer reconstructs the original STS-Nc based on the N STS-1s and a concatenation table the contents of which are shared between the transmit framer and the downstream receive framer.

摘要: A method and apparatus for the robust implementation and protection of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) traffic over a Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) Unidirectional Path Switched Ring (UPSR). The traditional SONET bridging function is eliminated for the ATM traffic in favor of a selector function. The selector function occurs at the ingress of the ATM traffic to the UPSR and directs the ATM traffic to its destination via a virtual path over the UPSR. The ATM traffic is protected from both SONET failures and ATM failures by means of an Intra-Ring Communication (IRC) protocol. The IRC protocol governs failure detection and the notification of the SONET nodes on the UPSR of the failure and any protection switch that may be necessary.
