摘要:
Optical line amplifiers with on-board controllers and supervisory devices for controlling optical line amplifiers are provided for controlling bootstrap or power-up procedures when optical line amplifiers are initially installed in an optical communication network. The controllers may include non-transitory computer-readable medium configured to store computer logic having instructions that, when executed, cause one or more processing devices to block an input to one or more gain units of the line amplifier and cause the line amplifier to operate in an Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) mode. In response to a detection of a valid power level of the line amplifier, the instructions can further cause the one or more processing devices to switch the line amplifier from the ASE mode to a regular mode and unblock the input to the one or more gain units of the line amplifier to allow operation of the line amplifier in the regular operating mode.

An electronic circuit for controlling a laser system consisting of a pulse source and high power fiber amplifier is disclosed. The circuit is used to control the gain of the high power fiber amplifier system so that the amplified output pulses have predetermined pulse energy as the pulse width and repetition rate of the oscillator are varied. This includes keeping the pulse energy constant when the pulse train is turned on. The circuitry is also used to control the temperature of the high power fiber amplifier pump diode such that the wavelength of the pump diode is held at the optimum absorption wavelength of the fiber amplifier as the diode current is varied. The circuitry also provides a means of protecting the high power fiber amplifier from damage due to a loss of signal from the pulse source or from a pulse-source signal of insufficient injection energy.

In an optical amplifier, comprising a rare earth doped optical waveguide, in which signals at signal wavelength and pump power at pump wavelength are coupled together, a differential loss inducing means is located in a predetermined position along the length of the waveguide, causing a loss for the signal greater by a predetermined loss amount than the loss for the pump wavelength, said predetermined loss amount and said predetermined loss position being chosen in a mutual relationship to cause an amplification of lower power input signals, in said signal input power range, greater than the amplification of higher power input signals in said range, by an amount causing a substantially constant output power in a dynamic range of input signals greater than 15 dB.

Apparatus and method for distributed absorption of pump light over a length of delivery fiber that is, for example in some embodiments, fusion spliced to an end of a multiply clad gain fiber that has significant unused pump light at the end of the gain fiber. In some embodiments, this includes coupling a fiber amplifier to a passive-core delivery fiber that includes a distributed pump dump. In some embodiments, at an output end of the amplifying fiber there is still a significant amount of pump power. If all this pump power is dumped in one small place (e.g., at a splice between the amplifying fiber and a passive delivery fiber) a hot spot will result, leading to unreliable devices that fail (have catastrophic changes in operating performance). The present invention provides a distributed pump dump built into a delivery fiber that is passive to the signal in its core.

An optical fiber amplifier surge protective apparatus includes an optical branch unit, an optical delay circuit, a light input hit detecting circuit, a compensation optical signal generating circuit, and an optical multiplexer. The optical branch unit branches an optical signal input from an optical fiber line into a main optical signal on a main optical path and a branch optical signal on a branch optical path. The optical delay circuit delays the main optical signal on the main optical path. The light input hit detecting circuit monitors the level of the branch optical signal on the branch optical path to detect an optical fiber line hit. The compensation optical signal generating circuit generates a compensation optical signal having a wavelength different from that of the optical signal input when the light input hit detecting circuit detects the optical fiber line hit. The optical multiplexer multiplexes the compensation optical signal from the compensation optical signal generating circuit and the delayed main optical signal from the optical delay circuit.

An optical limiting amplifier is disclosed having a high gain over a wide dynamic range of input power levels. The amplifier has an input stage (102) and an output stage (103), each of which includes an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (104, 106). The erbium-doped fiber amplifier in the input stage provides a high gain in order to saturate the amplifier in the second stage. The erbium-doped fiber amplifier in the output stage is fabricated with a small core diameter to saturate at reasonably small signal levels, and has a relatively lower total number of erbium ions in order to limit amplification once deep saturation is reached.
