    摘要: A hybrid air-gap/solid-state device protection device (PD) for use in an electrical power distribution system includes an air-gap disconnect unit connected in series with a solid-state device, a sense and drive circuit, and a microcontroller. Upon the sense and drive circuit detecting an impending fault or exceedingly high and unacceptable overvoltage condition in the PD's load circuit, the sense and drive circuit generates a gating signal that quickly switches the solid-state device OFF. Meanwhile, the microcontroller generates a disconnect pulse for the air-gap disconnect unit, which responds by forming an air gap in the load circuit. Together, the switched-OFF solid-state device and air gap protect the load and associated load circuit from being damaged. They also serve to electrically and physically isolate the source of the fault or overload condition from the remainder of the electrical power distribution system.

    摘要: An automatic switch of this type includes a switch latch for interrupting current, an overload tripping device and a short-circuit current tripping device for acting on the switch latch to trigger a current interruption. Generally there is also included at least one main contact device having at least one stationary contact and at least one movable contact, a movably supported contact lever attached to the at least one movable contact, and at least one arc quenching device associated with each main contact device. The improvement according to the invention includes a combination of an additional armature system having a magnet coil, a magnet core, a magnet armature and a striker pin. The striker pin is operable for directly striking the at least one movable contact lever and for lifting the at least one movable contact from the at least one stationary contact for a given limited time in the event of short-circuit currents, and the short-circuit current tripping device is in the form of a selective protection tripping device.

    摘要: Circuit-breaker system having a response time to shortcircuits of less than 4 milliseconds have multiple coordinated pole units wired in series in each phase. The system is able to clear a fault where the available current is high, for example 100,000 amperes at 240 volts AC although each pole unit may be of conventional construction having a current-interruption rating of only 5 or 10 thousand amperes. The operation exhibits current limiting properties, and the interruption process leaves the pole units remarkably free of arc damage.

    摘要: Protective equipment for an electric power distribution system comprising a bus, a supply circuit connected to the bus through a main circuit breaker, and feeder circuits connected to the bus through feeder circuit breakers. Should a high current fault occur on a feeder circuit, a short circuit is quickly established on the supply circuit on the bus side of the main breaker by means of a triggered vacuum gap device, which is triggered into conduction in response to the fault. This short circuit diverts current from the fault, thereby reducing the interrupting duty on the feeder breaker and enabling it to open on feeder faults producing fault current exceeding its interrupting capacity. After the feeder breaker has opened and before the main breaker can open, the triggered vacuum gap is returned to its normally non-conducting state, thus allowing power from the supply circuit to be restored to the bus.

    摘要: In an electrical distribution system including a solid-state circuit breaker (SSCB) and one or more downstream mechanical circuit breakers (CBs), a solid-state switching device in the SSCB is repeatedly switched ON and OFF during a short circuit event, to reduce a root-mean-square (RMS) value of the short circuit current. The resulting pulsed short circuit current is regulated in a hysteresis control loop, to limit the RMS to a value low enough to prevent the SSCB from tripping prematurely but high enough to allow one of the downstream mechanical CBs to trip and isolate the short circuit. Pulsing is allowed to continue for a maximum short circuit pulsing time. Only if none of the downstream mechanical CBs is able to trip to isolate the short circuit within the maximum short circuit pulsing time is the SSCB allowed to trip.
