Apparatuses and methods for improving disk pack balancing are provided including methods for centering disk clamps. One method to center a clamp is to modify the construction of the disk clamp to incorporate a centering flange located on the inner diameter and near an upper surface of the clamp. The hub assembly may also be modified to include an upper chamfer and an annular groove or notch to reduce the amount of potential surface contact between the centering flange of the disk and the outer diameter of the hub, thereby minimizing contamination caused by contact between the disk clamp and hub. Another method for improving disk pack balancing as well as general disk pack robustness is use of a modified hub assembly construction wherein an over-molded section includes a plurality of centering tabs that precisely align spacers and data storage disks within the disk pack.

A member of supporting magnetic disc substrates is provided, comprising a ceramic sinter containing a ceramic component and at least one conductive component selected from a group consisting of iron, niobium, tin zinc, copper, nickel, cobalt, and chromium, wherein the ceramic sinter has conductive aggregates on its peripheral surface. In the member, the ceramic component may be forsterite and the conductive component is iron oxide, wherein the ceramic sinter comprises a main phase of 2MgO.SiO2 and a secondary phase of at least one of MgFe2O4, Fe3O4 and Fe2O3. The ceramic sinter can be produced by a process including: sintering a ceramic sinter from a ceramic component and at least one conductive component selected from a group consisting of iron, niobium, tin zinc, copper, nickel, cobalt and chromium; machining the sinter into a desired shape of a member of supporting a magnetic disc substrate, and annealing the sinter such that the ceramic sinter has conductive aggregation deposited on its peripheral surface, wherein in the annealing step, the member is heated at a temperature in between a glass transition temperature of the sinter minus 500° C. and a softening temperature of the sinter plus 600° C.

A disk clamp for securing data storage disks to the hub of a spindle motor in a hard disk drive has a stress distributing cavity to reduce the stress concentration on disk under the screw locations. The cavity may comprise a single, completely circumferential annular slot located in the perimeter side wall of the clamp, or a series of smaller cavities that are angularly aligned with each screw in the perimeter of the clamp. In the case of adding a series of small stress distribution cavities, the load distribution is modulated to higher harmonic components, thus reducing the peak-to-valley value of reaction force on the contact ring by about 20% to 50%.

The invention describes the application of copper damascene connectors to a double level metal process. A dual damascene copper connector whose upper surface is coplanar with the upper surface of the insulating layer in which it is embedded is described. Out-diffusion of copper from the connector is prevented by at least two barrier layers. One or two barrier layers are located at the interface between the connector and the insulating layer while another barrier layer comprises conductive material and covers the upper surface of the connector. When a second damascene connector is formed above the first connector the conductive barrier layer facilitates good contact between the two connectors. It also acts as an etch stop layer during the formation of the second connector. A process for manufacturing this structure is also described. It involves over-filling a trench in the surface of the insulator with copper and then removing the excess by chem.-mech. polishing.

A disc is clamped to the spindle motor hub by a disc clamp assembly comprising a clamp plate and a retaining ring. The clamp plate includes an inner ring engagement portion, an outer disc engagement portion, and an initial, substantially planar shape in an undeformed state. The retaining ring is secured within the annular ring recess and maintains the clamp plate in a conically deformed state so that the inner ring engagement portion of the clamp plate applies a first moment force against the retaining ring while the outer disc engagement portion of the clamp plate applies a second moment force as an axially directed clamping force upon the disc.

The spacer assembly includes a first layer of damping material located between a washer and a spacer. The first layer of damping material damps vibration that is transmitted through the spacer assembly and into the disk. Damping vibration reduces track mis-registration in the disk drive due to mechanical vibration.
