Abstract: Provided is an electrophotographic photosensitive member, including: a support; a charge-generating layer on the support; a charge-transporting layer on the charge-generating layer; and a protective layer on the charge-transporting layer, wherein the protective layer contains the following components (α), (β), and (γ): (α) a polymer of a hole-transportable compound; (β) a polycarbonate resin; and (γ) a hole-transportable compound, wherein a content of the component (β) in the protective layer is 0.01 mass % or more and 4.0 mass % or less with respect to a content of the component (α) in the protective layer, wherein a content of the component (γ) in the protective layer is 0.001 mass % or more and 3.0 mass % or less with respect to the content of the component (α) in the protective layer, and wherein the charge-transporting layer contains the component (γ).

Abstract: An electrophotographic photosensitive member includes a conductive substrate and a photosensitive layer having a single-layer structure. The photosensitive layer contains a charge generating material, an electron transport material, a polycarbonate resin, and a hole transport material. The electron transport material includes a compound having a halogen atom and represented by general formula (1), (2), (3), (4), or (5). The hole transport material includes a compound represented by general formula (20), (21), (22), (23), (24), (25), (26), or (27). A charge of calcium carbonate as measured by charging the calcium carbonate through friction with the photosensitive layer is at least +6.5 μC/g. A Vickers hardness of the photosensitive layer at 45° C. is at least 17.0 HV.

A difference between a current Ia and a current Ib is in a range of from about 5.5×10−8 to about 9.2×10−8 [A/cm2] when a gold electrode is provided on the photosensitive layer, where the current Ia is a current when an electric field is applied by applying a voltage so that the gold electrode becomes positive, and the current Ib is a current when an electric field is applied by applying a voltage so that the conductive base becomes positive.

The single-layer-type photosensitive layer contains a binder resin, a charge generating material, an electron transporting material, and two hole transporting materials having different redox potentials. The two hole transporting materials are a hole transporting material A and a hole transporting material B that has a redox potential lower than that of the hole transporting material A. The ratio A/B of a weight of the hole transporting material A to a weight of the hole transporting material B is about 12/1 or more and about 36/1 or less.
