摘要: A method is taught for preparing a coating hopper prior to initiation of coating a liquid coating composition at a predetermined coating flow rate onto a moving substrate wherein the coating hopper includes at least one internal flow path therethrough. The internal flow path(s) of the coating hopper are drained. The liquid coating composition is introduced into internal flow path(s) at a purge flow rate which may be determined empirically. The internal flow path(s) are filled with the liquid coating composition and with the liquid coating composition then discharging from the internal flow path(s) onto a slide surface of the coating hopper, the liquid coating composition flowing down the slide surface and over a lip of the coating hopper at the purge rate to a drain. The flow of the liquid coating composition through the internal flow path(s) is maintained at the purge rate until air within the internal flow path(s) has been displaced from the coating hopper. Preferably, the internal flow path(s) are flushed with water prior to draining.

摘要: A method is taught for that allows for controlling and optimizing the level of adhesion between a multilayer composite applied to a support web. The method comprises the steps of selecting the support web with or without a subbing layer applied thereto; selecting an organic solvent that is substantially free of other constituents as a carrier layer; forming a multilayer composite including the carrier layer, the carrier layer being the lowermost layer thereof; applying the multilayer composite to the support web or the subbing layer; drying the multilayer composite on the support web, the carrier layer evaporating from the multilayer composite; testing the adhesive strength between the support web or subbing layer and the multilayer composite after drying; and repeating these steps until a desired level of adhesion is found.

摘要: An improved method of thin film coating is taught that uses a multi-slot coating apparatus to apply multiple liquid layers to a moving substrate. The lowermost layer contacting the substrate is comprised of an organic solvent. The lowermost layer may be a single organic solvent or a blend of several organic solvents. Whether comprised of a single organic solvent or a blend of organic solvents, the viscosity of the lowermost layer is less than 1 cp and the wet thickness of the lowermost layer is not more than about 5 nullm. Additional liquid layers are applied to the moving substrate on the top of the lowermost layer. This method allows for application of coatings at high substrate speeds. This method also allows for the reduction of coating artifacts caused by contamination of the surface of the die.

摘要: The present invention relates to a fluid conditioning system having a primary distribution channel configured to distribute coating fluid transversely. Fluid from the primary distribution channel is carried by a second conduit to a secondary distribution channel which is configured to minimize transverse pressure gradients in fluids having Reynolds Numbers of up to 50 without substantial formation of eddies. A product conduit withdraws liquid from the secondary distribution channel. This fluid conditioning system is particularly useful in applying photographic liquids to a web of photographic film or paper. For this utility, the system can be incorporated in a conventional slide hopper between adjacent layering plates or the liquid-applying plate and its adjacent layering plate.

摘要: Multilayer thermographic materials have improved adhesion between a polymeric support and film-forming polymer-containing layers disposed thereon. This improved adhesion is provided by including in the adhesion-promoting layer next to the support two or more polymers having specific properties. At least one of the polymers adheres the layer to the support, and at least one other polymer is compatible or of the same class as the film-forming polymer in the upper layer, such as a thermographic imaging layer. This adhesion-promoting layer can be provided as a very thin nullcarriernull layer during coating operations so that desired imaging effects and functional properties are obtained.

摘要: A solution applying method in which a continuously conveyed web is applied with a coating solution by a solution injector. The solution injector includes a lip with a lower end portion thereof having an angle of 85.degree. or less relative to a surface of the injector. A coating solution flows along the lip of the solution injector to form a bead between the lip and the web. The solution applying conditions and pressures before and after the bead is formed between the web and the lip are controlled before the coating solution is applied to the web such that a lower end portion of the bead coincides with the lower end portion of the lip. The solution applying device may have a lower end portion of the lip with an angle of not more than 89.degree.. A portion of the lip may extend parallel to a roller conveying the web and has a length of 0.1-10 mm. Even when a solution having good wettability is used as a coating solution, foreign matter is prevented from adhering to the lip due to drying, hardening and gelation of the coating solution to thereby prevent streaking for a relatively long duration.
