This invention involves an imaging process in which a light image is projected onto a photosensitive medium having a layer capable upon light exposure of directly generating nuclei of a metal more noble than silver, such as palladium, which metal is catalytic to the electroless deposition of a non-noble metal, and thereafter selectively providing non-noble free metal onto the noble metal nuclei by electroless deposition, thereby providing a visible print of the original light image. The photosensitive layer in such media may comprise a compound of a metal more noble than silver and a photosensitive composition which can generate upon light exposure a reducing agent for said noble metal. In another embodiment, the photosensitive layer may contain a photoreducible metal salt which, upon light exposure, generates nuclei of a metal more noble than silver.

A method for forming a printed circuit is disclosed. The method comprises coating the surface of an insulating substrate with a solution of metal salts of organic acids in a mixed solvent consisting of alcohol, water and ammonia to form a photosensitive layer consisting of said metal salts thereon, irradiating the desired portions of the layer with ultraviolet rays so as to deposit the metal on a pattern of a desired circuit, developing and fixing the deposited metal, and carrying out the plating on the pattern, whereby the deposited metal functions as the nuclei for the plating.

A first compound of an enamine, a second compound of an aromatic amine and a third compound which decomposes upon exposure to actinic radiation liberating acidic material are dissolved in an agent and stirred at a high speed to provide a photosensitive emulsion. The emulsion is applied onto a sheet of substrate paper and solidified in a dark drying chamber. The photosensitive-layer coated paper is subjected to an imagewise actinic radiation having a wavelength shorter than 4,500 A and then to a second exposure to a radiation having a wavelength longer than 5,400 A and to heat at a temperature of about 80.degree. to 120.degree.C.

A method of depositing a metal pattern on a surface of a substrate is disclosed. A surface of the substrate is sensitized with a photosensitive palladium sensitizer. The sensitized surface is exposed to a source of ultraviolet radiation to delineate an unexposed pattern corresponding to the desired metal pattern. The selectively ultraviolet radiation-exposed surface is then immersed in a suitable electroless metal deposition solution wherein an electroless metal is catalytically reduced on the delineated unexposed pattern.
