Disclosed are direct positive photographic photosensitive materials which have at least one internal latent image core/shell type silver halide emulsion layer, which has not been pre-fogged, on a support wherein the silver halide molar ratio of the core and shell of the emulsion is not more than 1/5, and wherein at least one type of compound which can be represented by the formula (N-I) indicated below is included in the photosensitive material. ##STR1## In this formula, Z represents a non-metal atomic group which is required to form a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring, and Z may be substituted with substituents. R.sup.1 is an aliphatic group, and R.sup.2 is a hydrogen atom, an aliphatic group or an aromatic group. R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 may be substituted with substituents. Furthermore, R.sup.2 may be joined to the heterocyclic ring which is completed by and form a ring. However, at least one of the groups represented by R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and Z contains an alkynyl group, acyl group, hydrazine group or hydrazone group, or alternatively a 6-membered ring is formed with R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 and a dihydropyridinium skeleton is formed. Moreover, at least one of the groups represented by R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and Z may be a group which promotes adsorption on silver halide. A direct-positive photographic material for producing images by fogging development wherein the photographic material contains an unfogged silver halide emulsion layer. The silver halide grains in the unfogged emulsion have a layered grain structure wherein there is a first phase in which is localized a relatively high silver chloride content of at least 20 mol percent based on the total silver halide content of the grain. A second phase contains from less silver chloride than the first phase down to no silver chloride and the total silver chloride in the grain does not exceed 30 mol percent.The physical position of the first phase in the grain is not critical.The emulsion is either not chemically sensitized or only slightly sensitized.The photographic material and its use includes both producing black and white and colored photographic images and has high sensitivity to light and by fogging development yields pure image whites.

A color diffusion transfer light-sensitive material incorporates the emulsion and has reduced sensitivity reduction. In a method for forming a direct positive color image which comprises image-wise exposing to light a light-sensitive material comprising a support having provided thereon at least one photographic emulsion layer contaiing unfogged internal latent image type silver halide grains and a color image-forming coupler; developing the light-sensitive material with a surface developing solution containing an aromatic primary amine type color developing agent in the presence of a nucleating agent and/or fogging exposure; bleaching and fixing the resulting material to form the direct positive color image, the improvement is characterized in that the developing solution has a pH of 11.5 or less and does not substantially contain benzyl alcohol; the color coupler is a compound which forms or releases a substantially non-diffusive dye by oxidation coupling with a developing agent, and the internal latent image type silver halide grains have a particular core/shell structure.According to the method, a direct positive color image having a high maximum color density and a low minimum image density can be obtained in a short time.
