    摘要: The present invention relates to a total reflection type optical switch using polymer insertion type silica optical waveguides and a manufacturing method thereof. The total reflection type optical switch forms a trench in an intersecting point of the silica optical waveguides having two optic routes, and inserts a polymer into the trench. A total reflection type optical switch has a heater which heats the polymer. The polymer is made of thermo-optic material, and totally reflects an optical signal as a refraction index falls when heated by the heater. In addition, when not heated by the heater, the polymer transilluminates the optical signal. When the polymer is made of electric-optic material, the total reflection type optical switch may have upper and lower electrodes for applying an electric field in the polymer instead of the heater. In this case, the total reflection type optical switch is capable of high speed switching, and is not limited to usages of an optical switch, and may be used as a variable optical attenuator by adjusting the voltage and current being applied. According to the present invention, it is possible to use the difference of the refraction indexes of the silica optical waveguides and the polymer due to temperature changes to transilluminate or totally reflect an optical signal according to changes of the refraction index of the polymer, thereby improving loss characteristics of the optical signal.

    摘要: An optical switch includes electro-optic crystal, and electrode unit including a plurality of electrodes arranged on the same plane in electro-optic crystal to extend in parallel to one another. A refractive index of a part of electro-optic crystal is changed by an electric field generated at electrode unit, thereby switching transmission and reflection of light incident on electro-optic crystal. Electro-optic crystal has an entrance surface through which light enters and an exit surface from which light exits. Electrode unit is located between the entrance surface and the exit surface. An angle θx formed between a longitudinal direction of electrodes and at least one surface from among the entrance surface and the exit surface is set near an angle that satisfies the expression θx=90°−Sin−1[ cos(Tan−1(n))] in a wavelength of light to be modulated.

The backlight includes a plurality of spaced apart light waveguides and a plurality of selection elements associated with the light waveguides that change the characteristics of the material of the light waveguides to selectively direct the transmission of light toward the liquid crystal layer. The combination of the waveguides and the selection elements provide light to the front of the display in a non-uniform temporal manner and a non-uniform spatial manner during a frame.

    摘要: An imaging method includes emitting radiation from an illumination source towards a total internal reflection (TIR) modulator. At least one of the pixel regions is controlled to form at least one image pixel on a surface. A first electric potential is imposed on a first pixel region, the first electric potential being associated with a first signal provided by a first electrical conductor to the second set of electrodes associated with the first pixel region, the first electrical conductor extending over a first non-pixel region. A second electric potential is imposed on the first pixel region, the second electric potential being associated with a second signal provided by a second electrical conductor to first set of electrodes associated with the first pixel region, the second electrical conductor extending over a second non-pixel region, wherein the second non-pixel region is different from the first non-pixel region, and the second electric potential is different from the first electric potential. The second electric potential is imposed on the first non-pixel region.

    摘要: A switchable coupler (10) has a first waveguide (15) defining an inlet port (31) for a first unpolarized light input (A) and a first outlet port (32), and also a second waveguide (16) defining an inlet port (41) for a second unpolarized light input (13) and a second outlet port (42). Polarization splitter devices (11, 12) and two electro-optical switches (13,14) are sandwiched between the waveguides (15, 16). The polarization splitter devices (11, 12) are positioned to split the light inputs (A and B) into respective refracted and reflected polarized components (AL and AF; BL and BF), and the electro-optical switch (13) is operable by the application across it of a potential difference (+V) to recombine the polarized components (BL, BF) and to couple them with the light output AT through the first outlet port (32).
