摘要: An optical device includes a waveguide including a first medium, which is transparent and has a first index of refraction at a target wavelength and which has mutually-parallel first and second surfaces arranged so that light at the target wavelength propagates within the waveguide by internal reflection between the first and second surfaces. A coupling layer is disposed over the first surface of the waveguide and includes a second medium having a second index of refraction at the target wavelength, which is greater than the first index of refraction, and is patterned to define a periodic array of cylinders, which have respective cylinder axes perpendicular to the first surface and have respective heights and diameters that are smaller than the target wavelength, and which are spaced apart such that a distance between each of the cylinders and a neighboring cylinder in the array is less than the target wavelength.

The optical touch sensing device is configured to detect the presence of an external object (10) on the basis of changes in the light delivered further out of the light guide assembly due to interaction of the light with the external object. According to the invention, the light guide assembly comprises source-to-detector lines (4, 4′, 5) for at least two sources (31) and detectors (41), the source-to-detector lines being formed by light guide stripes (4), each of which is divided into at least two substripes (4′), one for each detector, each source-to-detector line having one interaction arrangement (27) defining a restricted interaction area (11).

摘要: According to one embodiment, a display device includes light sources, light guides, interconnects, first electrodes, a second electrode, an insulating layer and a drive unit. The light guides extend in a first direction. The interconnects extend in a second direction. Each of the first electrodes is connected to each of the interconnects. Slits are provided in each of the first electrodes. The second electrode is provided between the first electrodes and the light guides. The insulating layer is provided between the first and second electrodes. The drive unit is connected to the interconnects and the second electrode. Each light guide body includes one end, another end on an opposite side, and a side surface. The light guide bodies are disposed with a pitch. Each of the light sources is juxtaposed to the one end of each light guide body and configured to cause a light to enter the light guide bodies. Each light extraction unit faces the side surface. Each light extraction unit includes light extraction elements. The control unit is configured to supply an electric signal to each light extraction unit. The control unit makes the light extraction units extract the light that enters the light guide bodies and propagates through the light guide bodies in accordance with the electric signal. Positions between the light extraction elements are uniformly distributed.

摘要: A light guide with optics guides light exiting the guide. The device achieves accurate control of the reflected light by extracting light from a limited area of the light guide. The configuration of the reflectors used for the selective extraction determines the nature of the output light. The reflectors may be located on a side of the light guide opposite to an output side of the light guide.

摘要: An interference modulator (Imod) incorporates anti-reflection coatings and/or micro-fabricated supplemental lighting sources. An efficient drive scheme is provided for matrix addressed arrays of IMods or other micromechanical devices. An improved color scheme provides greater flexibility. Electronic hardware can be field reconfigured to accommodate different display formats and/or application functions. An IMod's electromechanical behavior can be decoupled from its optical behavior. An improved actuation means is provided, some one of which may be hidden from view. An IMod or IMod array is fabricated and used in conjunction with a MEMS switch or switch array. An IMod can be used for optical switching and modulation. Some IMods incorporate 2-D and 3-D photonic structures. A variety of applications for the modulation of light are discussed. A MEMS manufacturing and packaging approach is provided based on a continuous web fed process. IMods can be used as test structures for the evaluation of residual stress in deposited materials.
