A method for compensating axial misalignment between wheel-mounted alignment sensors and an axis of rotation for an associated wheel. The method compensates sensors mounted to each wheel of a vehicle simultaneously, without requiring jacking of the vehicle wheels above a supporting surface, and which only requires wheel rotational movement over an arc of 60 degrees or less. The method utilizes measurements of a change in a wheel toe angle and measurements of a change in a wheel camber angle, during a measured rotational movement of the wheel, to identify sinusoidal variation in the respective toe and camber angles during the wheel's rotational movement, from which a measure of axial misalignment between the wheel-mounted alignment sensor axis of rotation and the wheel axis of rotation is identified.

An automobile body 2 with a wheel mount 5 vertically movably mounted thereon is supported, and the wheel mount 5 is lifted to an adjusting position which is set so as to be lower than the position that the wheel mount 5 takes when the automobile is running. The position of the wheel mount 5 as it is lifted and toe and camber angles thereof are measured, and estimated values of the toe and camber angles at the position that the wheel mount 5 takes when the automobile is running are calculated based on the measured values. Thereafter, adjustment quantities for the toe and camber angles at the adjusting position are calculated, and wheel alignment is adjusted at the adjusting position based on the adjustment quantities. Wheel alignment of the automobile can be measured and adjusted quickly and accurately for increased productivity without applying the same load to the automobile body as the load that is applied when the automobile is running.

Two rectangular housings are mounted in a pair of spaced recesses in a garage floor to have cover means thereon moved to closed positions flush with the floor surface. Mounted in one end of each housing beneath a first cover is a rotatable wheel-supporting pad, which is slidable longitudinally of the housing, and is reciprocable vertically by a pneumatically operated scissors jack. Each housing has pivoted on its opposite end a second cover which carries on its inside surface a laser, a mirror, and a conventional alignment chart for denoting toe in, toe out, camber, etc., all of which items are disposed within one section of the housing when the pivotal cover is closed. When the pivotal covers are swung to upright positions, each laser directs a beam of light upwardly onto the associated mirror, which is inclined at 45.degree. to the vertical, so that the mirrors direct their beams horizontally through an aperture in the center of the associated chart and coaxially toward one another. The lasers, mirrors and charts are adjustably mounted on their respective pivotal covers so that the beams of light can be properly focused. The apparatus is particularly suited for use with a garage bay of the type having a lift for engaging the frame of an auto to raise and lower the latter.
