A fragmentation warhead is provided, capable of being mounted in a carrier vehicle, the warhead having a longitudinal axis. In at least one example the warhead includes a shell that extends along the longitudinal axis. The shell includes a fixed shell portion and a fragmentation portion, and defines therebetween a cavity for accommodating therein an explosive charge. The fragmentation portion includes at least one set of serially adjacent fragments in correspondingly serially contiguous relationship in the fragmentation portion and in generally helical relationship with respect to the longitudinal axis. A corresponding carrier vehicle and a corresponding missile are also provided.

A warhead which upon detonation imparts such high velocities to particles magnesium that they expand outwardly faster than the gas from the explosion. The particles are positioned so that they are propelled in predetermined directions. The burning particles precondition the air thus allowing the gaseous explosion products to expand in the particle paths at a much more rapid rate than normal. Larger aluminum particles are also positioned to travel in predetermined directions upon detonation. As the magnesium particles travel outward they lose their effect on the gas cloud because of the distance between them and the expanding gas cloud. The aluminum particles then emerge from the slowing gas cloud and precondition the air to promote more rapid and further expansion of the gas cloud in the paths of the aluminum particles.

An aerodynamic directional grenade in the form of a body formed of a high-energy explosive material, said grenade having a generally saucerlike configuration with upper and lower surfaces that are adapted to sail through the air, the upper surface having a length in the direction of airflow which is greater than the length of the lower surface in the direction of airflow, whereby, when the body is propelled through the air an aerodynamic lift is imparted to the body. Fragment forming means is carried adjacent to one portion of the body, and means is carried by the body for detonating the body. A launcher is provided for the aerodynamic directional grenade and has a launcher housing which carries a magazine that is adapted to receive a plurality of the grenades stacked one above the other, the housing having a discharge opening through which the grenades can be discharged. Means is mounted on the housing for receiving the grenades one by one from the magazine and discharging the same through the said opening at a speed so that the grenades are propelled aerodynamically through the air. Means is further included in said launcher to impart to the aerodynamic directional grenade a degree of rotation resulting in gyroscopic stability about an axis generally transverse to the direction of aerodynamic flight, requisite to maintaining a favorable aerodynamic flight orientation and desired orientation at detonation. Means is mounted on the housing for initiating operation, on or before the grenade leaves the housing, of the means carried by the body for detonating the body. The weapons system may typically be used on a vehicle on which at least one launcher is carried by the vehicle and in which the launcher includes a means for launching the grenades sequentially from said magazine and to disperse the grenades automatically over a predetermined area within reasonably immediate range of the vehicle within a relatively short period of time. A plurality of the launchers can be provided to cover all the immediate area around the vehicle. The weapons system is capable of saturating the area immediately in the vicinity of the launcher with lethal fragments within a very short period of time.

When firing the first volley a weapon uses an estimated velocity and, at firing, the muzzle velocity of a projectile is measured. When firing the second volley a weapon's fire control calculates an aiming point using the measured velocity of the first volley.

To control a crowd, the projectile is launched over the crowd by direct contact with a solid arm and the activating mechanism is used to activate the incapacitating agent when the projectile is above the crowd.

The missile releases all heads either in response to a timed delay from drop or launch or in response to movement of the missile to a predetermined position relative to the target. Upon release the explosive heads are rotated to swing each head away from the other heads while retaining orientation of each head so that firing of the dispersed heads will cause fragments to discharge forwardly toward the target without undue interference with the fragments from other heads.
