    Abstract: A heater having a combustion chamber. The heater includes a hopper and a chute extending from an outlet of the hopper to the combustion chamber. The heater includes a chute extending from the hopper to the combustion chamber, a screw extending through the chute into the hopper, and a drive connected to the screw for turning the screw in a direction in which the flight would, but for downward forces, lift the fuel. The heater has a vane rotatably attached to the screw that rotates downward along the screw in absence of upward forces counteracting gravity. The vane is cambered to produce upward forces when turning with the screw beneath an upper surface of the fuel. The vane is biased toward the upper surface of the fuel to level the upper surface of the fuel and prevent the fuel from rat holing and arching.

    Abstract: A heating system comprises an oven located above a solid fuel stove, a chimney for receiving combustion gases from the solid fuel stove, and a heat exchanger in the chimney for transferring heat from the combustion gases to a flow of water. A heat exchange passage adjacent a water tank receives combustion gases from the stove and transfers heat from the combustion gases to water in the water tank. A damper is adjustable for controlling the flow of the combustion gases to the chimney and to the heat exchange passage.

    Abstract: A heat-sink type of water heater unit is disclosed wherein the unit is designed for external installation on a stove to transfer heat from the stove to water flowing through the unit, to pre-heat the water for subsequent use. The unit has a flat surface which can be bolted to the outside of the stove, an inlet which can be attached to a cold-water source, a U-shaped inner passage in which water can flow and be heated by the stove, and a discharge which can be hooked up to a hot-water tank. In addition, the unit has an adjustment feature which enables the unit to be moved laterally, closer to or farther away from the hot stove wall to which the unit is connected. By regulating the distance between the unit and the stove, the water temperature produced by the unit can be selectively controlled.

    Abstract: An improved heating system for a building structure is described. The improved system utilizes heat generated by an enclosed natural fuel burning device such as an auxiliary furnace as a supplemental source for a standard (primary) furnace heating system. The auxiliary furnace is used to heat water or another heat exchange medium in a heat exchange member situated within the auxiliary furnace. When the water reaches a predetermined temperature, a first pump is activated and causes the water to be pumped throughout the radiators within the building and subsequently returned to the auxiliary furnace. When the temperature of the water falls below a certain level, a thermostatic switch deactivates the pump. When the temperature in the building declines below the thermostat setting for sensing the ambient building temperature, the primary furnace and a second pump are activated which in turn heat the water and circulate it throughout the structure. A system of one way check valves prevents the water from flowing in the primary furnace leg when the auxiliary furnace leg is operating and vice versa. The capacity of the first pump and the setting of the thermostatic switch are selected so that the heat supplied by the auxiliary furnace leg is approximately equal to the heat loss of the building structure and also to allow for the automatic start up of the primary furnace leg and shut down of the auxiliary furnace leg when the water within the heat exchange coil reaches a preset temperature. The improved heating system of this invention allows for increased efficiency, safety, comfort and convenience of operation.

    Abstract: A wood or coal burning stove having walls defining a fire chamber with a flue disposed in one of the walls. A door provides access to the fire chamber, and a vent for controlling the combustion air is provided in the door. A manifold connected to inlet and outlet pipes passing through the walls provides for circulation of water through the fire chamber to heat the water with a fire burning in the fire chamber. Fuel supporting members extend downwardly from the manifold to support the fuel below the manifold, a number of generally U-shaped pipes with both ends of each pipe in fluid communication with the manifold providing the fuel supporting members. A baffle or like structure is provided in the manifold for preventing short-circuiting between the inlet and outlet pipes, and the manifold is supported in a generally horizontal plane. A damper is movable between a start-up position wherein gases may flow directly from the fire through the flue, to a normal position wherein gases are forced to flow both past the bottom and top of the manifold before exiting the flue.

    Abstract: A heating appliance which burns solid fuel has a bottom feed to a furnace vessel, conveniently by means of an auger. The furnace vessel is arranged to be driven in rotation which assists keeping a uniformly distributed fire in the furnace vessel, and makes possible the discharge of ash overflowing from the top of the vessel through an airlock system. Preferably, a water jacket surrounds the furnace vessel and a poker is moved in the furnace vessel as it rotates. Combustion air can be blown or sucked in by a fan.     Abstract: A wood burning heating system comprises a large hot water storage tank and a furnace or boiler with a water jacket and a vaulted ceiling over a firebox with a refractory bottom and a refractory lining partially up the side walls of the firebox. The volume of the tank is about ten to twenty times larger than the volume of the water jacket, whereby the large hot water volume acts as a heat storage and as a buffer or heat output equalizer counteracting any intermittent heat input inherent in a solid fuel system especially a wood burning system. The firebox is elongated and the door is so arranged that wood pieces of random and substantial size may be charged into the firebox so that the wood is burning while it is in a horizontal position. The large hot water storage tank may receive additional heat input, for example from an electrical heater operated by a wind driven generator. If desired, the furnace may be installed inside the large hot water storage tank. The furnace or boiler with the tanks and interconnected pipes form a connected container system having a common water level and vented to the atmosphere above said common water level whereby the system works at atmospheric pressure and the boiler cannot develop any steam pressure.
