In various embodiments, heat pumps, heat engines and pumped heat energy storage systems and methods of operating the same are provided. Abstract: NMSET and related device uses and improvements to the forces generated. Laminar flow control systems benefit from NMSET and related devices as they simplify installation and are easier to retrofit on existing aircraft. Necessary temperature gradients can me generated by using a heated material with the sides at different energy accommodation coefficients. Surface geometries can be used to increase the force generated. Photovoltaic film can be embedded into the membrane, providing a source of energy that can offset the power required for desired thrust. Intake scoops improve the air flow through the micro thrusters and surface geometries, and airflow diffusers increase air flow interaction with the hotter surface resulting in higher thrust outputs.

Abstract: A microfluidic pump on a monolithic chip. A closed length of channel is disposed on the chip, with a plurality of energizers disposed along the length of the channel. Each energizer is associated with a unique energizer designation. An onboard controller and energizer fire control lines are also disposed on the chip. One each of the energizer fire control lines is electrically connecting one each of the energizers to the onboard controller. Inputs are electrically connected to the onboard controller, for connecting the onboard controller to an external controller that is not disposed on the chip. The inputs include a power input, a ground input, and an enable input. The onboard controller has circuitry to (a) receive from the external controller an enable on the enable input, (b) send a timed sequence of fire commands on the energizer fire control lines to a selected number of energizers that is greater than one, starting with a stored starting energizer and ending with an ending energizer, and (c) update the stored starting energizer with the designation for the energizer next following the ending energizer.

Abstract: A network of microfluidic channels may include at least three loops interconnected at a junction. Each of the loops may include a fluid channel having a length extending from the junction to a second end; and a fluid actuator along the fluid channel and located at a first distance from junction along the length of the fluid channel and at a second distance less than the first distance from the second end. Activation of the fluid actuator of selected ones of the at least three loops may selectively produce net fluid flow in different directions about the loops. In one implementation, a fluid channel having a fluid actuator may have a bridging portion that extends over another fluid channel.
