A multi-chamber oil boom includes a first bladder and a second bladder, each having an inflatable interior. A valve includes an air passage that communicates between the interior of the first bladder and the interior of the second bladder. The valve further includes a clamping spring assembly that provides compressive force on the air passage and closes the air passage until partial inflation of the first bladder causes the air passage to open against the compressive force of the clamping spring assembly to open the air passage and allow air to travel from the inflatable interior of the first bladder to the inflatable interior of the second bladder.

An oil spill containment collar system for aquatic vessels. A deployable floatation collar and apron apparatus automatically surrounds the periphery of the vessel to be contained. This continuous collar only takes a few minutes to become full functional. The collar may be stored either inboard or outboard of the vessel's gunnel about the deck. In the version of the embodiment which stores the collar inboard of the gunnel, the collar is lowered into the water by a gear or spring-torsion driven pivot arms that lift the collar from the deck area and up over the gunnel. the collar is inflated after lowering over the gunnel, encircling the entire vessel, and giving vertical support to an attached apron. In the outboard version, the collar is automatically released from a container and inflated by compressed gas means. The collar is provided with secondary floatation means to ensure its buoyancy. In both versions, the top edge of the apron is maintained level with the surface of the oil spill, by means of the attached and inflatable collar.

Each boom section includes two or more parallel inflatable chambers which are joined with a weighted curtain which is reinforced for strength. Boom sections are stored compactly on respective reels. A substantial number of reels are arranged compactly in the hold of a carrier vessel which is smaller in size and has greater speed and maneuverability than vessels carrying known oil spill containment systems. Boom sections are consecutively unwound from their respective reels and connected end-to-end as they are deployed to form a continuous boom. The boom sections unwind naturally from the reels as the carrier vessel moves through the water away from a tender vessel holding the first end of the boom. The boom's deployment is controlled by a brake on an idler roller and a hydraulic crane's drive wheel on the reel, thus limiting manual handling to lighter-weight tasks. The carrier vessel, or, preferably, the tender vessel may inflate the chambers of the boom sections as they are deployed. The system is self-contained, as the carrier vessel is adapted to carry the tender vessel on its aft deck, releasing it when arriving at the spill site. Also, the tender can simultaneously deploy two substantially parallel booms, allowing an oil spill to be controllably segmented into smaller oil spills which are anchored or towed to calmer waters to await skimmer vessels.
