A primer composition is provided for priming roofing and waterproofing membranes such as EPDM and TPO. The primer composition includes a halogenated copolymer of isobutylene and p-methyl styrene, a thermoplastic rubber, a tackifier, and a solvent comprising water and at least one volatile organic compound. The primer composition also preferably includes a plasticizer and an accelerator/cure package. The primer composition exhibits a volatile organic compound (VOC) content of less than about 250 g/l, and promotes effective adhesion of roofing adhesives to roofing membranes.

A flowable uncured adhesive elastomeric composition suitable for delivery to assembly sites by pumping through supply lines is provided, which has a tensile strength suitable for formation of a strong bond, comprising: (a) an elastomer having a viscosity higher than flowable; (b) a synthetic resin curable by the same cure system as said non-flowable elastomer in an amount sufficient to lower the viscosity of the mixture to a pumpable level; (c) an unsaturated polymeric adduct of a dicarboxylic acid or dicarboxylic acid derivative in an amount sufficient to provide adhesive properties to the mixture; and (d) a curing agent. Preferably the composition also comprises a crosslink-enhancing coagent in an amount sufficient to lower percent elongation and increase adhesive bond strength of the cured elastomer. The compositions are useful for bonding substrates such as other elastomers, metals, plastics, glass, fibers, paper and fabrics.

A process for preparing a lap seam for roofing comprising applying a butyl rubber-containing primer with a mesh pad to the EPDM membrane surfaces to be joined, the primer having an elastomeric solids content of from about 15-20 percent, by weight. Thereafter positioning a splice tape between the primed surfaces to form a seam structure and applying pressure to the structure thus provided to form an adhesively-held lap seam characterized by being water tight and having superior peel strength.

An adhesive composition suitable for wound dressing and other medical applications comprising a mixture of polyisobutylene and a rubber polymer selected from the group consisting of random styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and halobutyl rubber so as to form a rubbery elastomer base matrix, and at least one hydrocolloid. The addition of the SBR or halobutyl rubber to the elastomer base offsets the possible degradation of the polyisobutylene upon sterilization, and therefore, helps to maintain the integrity of the composition. Water soluble hydrocolloid gums and water swellable cohesive strengthening agents are dispersed within the base matrix and may carry a pharmaceutical agent to be dispensed directly to a wound site.

A solvent based contact adhesive suitable for bonding cured EPDM membranes is disclosed. The adhesive includes a crosslinked halogenated butyl rubber, a low molecular weight, high softening point, thermoplastic aliphatic-type-based hydrocarbon resin and at least one organic solvent employed as a dispersion medium for the crosslinked halogenated butyl rubber and the resin. The disclosed adhesive exhibits superior heat aging and hot water immersion properties which are significant characteristics in roof applications.
