Methods and apparatus for processing hydrocarbons are provided. In one example, a method for processing hydrocarbons includes the step of providing feed stream including toluene, ethylbenzene, mixed xylenes, and C9 hydrocarbons. Ethylbenzene is present in the feed stream in an amount of at least about 20% by weight of total C8 aromatic hydrocarbons present in the feed stream. The method further includes the step of subjecting the feed stream to ethylbenzene conversion to form a benzene-containing product stream that includes benzene.

A process for the catalytic reforming of hydrocarbons wherein a hydrogen-rich gas stream passed through the reaction zone on a once-through basis is obtained by passing a hydrogen-containing feed gas stream through an absorber which removes light paraffins. The gas separated from the reaction zone effluent by partial condensation is passed into a stripper as the stripping media used to remove these same light paraffins from the liquid used in the absorber.

INCREASED YIELDS OF CRUDE ANTHRACENE ARE OBTAINED FROM A MIXTURE CONTAINING PHENANTHRENE, ANTHRANENE, AND THEIR HOMOLOGS, E.G., FROM A FRACTION HAVING A BOILING RANGE OF 338-355*C., OBTAINED PREFERABLY FROM A RESIDUAL OIL FROM BENZENE PYROLYSIS TO ETHYLENE RICH IN AROMATIC SUBSTANCES, BY REACTING SAID FRACTION AT TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 700 AND 850*C., PREFERABLY BETWEEN 750 AND 800*C., WITH A TIME OF STAY OF 1 TO 10 SECONDS, WITH A TENFOLD TO TWENTY-FOLD MOLECULAR EXCESS OF HYDROGEN AND SEPARATING THE ANTHRACENE FROM THE REACTION PRODUCT IN CONVENTIONAL MANNER. FROM THE REACTION PRODUCT A CRUDE ANTHRACENE OF 55% AND A YIELD OF 60% BASED ON THE WEIGHT OF ANTHRACENE PRESENT IN THE REACTION PRODUCT, CAN BE OBTAINED BY FRACTIONAL DISTILLATION.
