Abstract:
A gas generator includes at least two functional subassemblies and at least two retention parts. The functional subassemblies each have an axis defining an axial direction and at least one outer dimension in a plane normal to the axial direction. The retention parts are each radially crimped for retaining one of the at least two functional subassemblies on the gas generator. The at least two retention parts are formed on the same part of the gas generator and the at least two functional subassemblies are positioned on the gas generator with a centre distance of axes less than or equal to 1.5 times this outer dimension and that each retention part is radially crimped over at least 90% of its periphery.

Furthermore, a safety system incorporating such a safety steering column and a motor vehicle so equipped that can distinguish between different drivers regarding weight, size and belted condition; the system providing alternative safety measures depending on the driver's needs for protection.
Abstract:
A venting system venting inflated inflatables at a predetermined time period after inflation utilizes non-flaming pyrotechnic materials. The system is used in the restraint system of a vehicle and senses the initiation of a crash pulse to control the passage of inflation fluid to the inflatable. A pyrotechnic delay column responds to the inflation gas to activate an output member connected to the outside surface of the inflatable to weaken the threads of the fabric. As adjacent threads weaken, a rip is created which very quickly cause the inflatable to deflate. In an alternative embodiment, an initiator responsive to an actuating signal generated by a crash pulse activates the pyrotechnic delay column.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a gas generator, including a housing having therein an ignition device chamber, which is provided with a gas discharge port and accommodates an ignition device, and a pressurized gas chamber filled with a pressurized gas, the ignition device chamber and the pressurized gas chamber being separated by a partition wall having a communication hole, the partition wall being in a cup-like shape which includes a bottom surface and a circumferential wall surface, projects toward the pressurized gas chamber and has a flange portion at a portion corresponding to an opening in the cup-like shape of the partition wall, only the circumferential wall surface having the communication hole, the flange portion being fixed to the housing, a disk closing member being disposed inside the partition wall to be movable in the axial direction of the housing with a distance from the bottom surface, prior to activation, the communication hole being closed by a circumferential surface of the disk closing member, and at the time of activation, the closing member being moved toward the bottom surface by combustion products generated by the ignition device, thereby opening the communication hole and making communication between the ignition device chamber and the pressurized gas chamber.
Abstract:
A gas generator for providing gases in which the gas generating propellant is ignited by a multiple charge primer. In one embodiment the primer includes a primer housing which contains a sensitizer and output charge pill which are maintained in spaced relationship. When a firing pin is driven into engagement with the primer, the sensitizer frictionally engages with the output charge pill to cause ignition of at least the output charge pill. This ignition of the output charge pill, directly or indirectly, ignites the propellant to provide gases for a desired function. In this regard, the gas generator is suitable for use in a pretensioner for a seat belt restraint system and in an inflator for expanding an air/safety bag.
Abstract:
An ignition assembly in a motor vehicle inflatable safety system is provided, preferably to be used with a projectile. In one embodiment, the ignition assembly includes an actuation piston and an activator, such as a percussion primer(s) and an ignition material, which are separated by a retention pin. When a sufficient force is exerted on the actuation piston, the retention pin fails such that the actuation piston moves and impacts the percussion primer(s) to ignite the propellant within the gas generator. The resulting propellant gases are thereafter provided in a predetermined direction(s). Advantageously, a check valve-like device is employed to substantially reduce the flow of propellant gases in a direction other than the predetermined direction(s). The preferred projectile also includes a body that has a smaller dimension than the projectile piercing head when the projectile is used to separate a closure disk to release stored, pressurized gases in addition to activating the gas generator. In this case, the preferred projectile facilitates the controlled separation of any closure disk used to retain pressurized, stored gases used by the . inflator in addition to the propellant gases.

Abstract:
An air bag device, comprising: an inflatable cushion being configured for deployment from the air bag device; an inflator for inflating the inflatable cushion, the inflator being in fluid communication with the inflatable cushion, the inflator comprising a first initiator for initiating a first stage of inflation and a second initiator for use with the first initiator for initiating a second stage of inflation, the first stage of inflation providing a first inflation output to the inflatable cushion; and a deployable member disposed within the inflatable cushion, the deployable member being in fluid communication with the inflator, wherein the first stage of inflation causes the deployable member to deploy in a first direction; wherein unobstructed deployment of the deployable member in the first direction will cause a signal to be sent to the second initiator to initiate the second stage of inflation.
