Abstract: A vehicle door trim for a motor vehicle with a head impact protection device for a vehicle occupant is provided. In one embodiment, the door trim includes a curb carrier of the vehicle door trim in which is located a cutout for fixing the head impact protection device in the assembled position of the vehicle door trim in an area close to the side window of the vehicle door, a head impact protection device, which comprises an airbag carrier joined to the curb carrier so as to be airtight, an airbag, which on the rim side is fixed to the airbag carrier so as to be airtight, and a gas generator, which may be permanently joined to the airbag carrier. Abstract: A plurality of individually or collectively actuatable air bag restraint devices for disposition both forward of and alongside of each passenger seating area within a vehicle. Each individual device is strategically located to provide the maximum cushioning effect with a minimum of obstruction within the passenger seating area within the associated vehicle. Each air bag restraint device includes a hollow open-sided housing designed for flush or recessed mounting in an associated vehicle body portion and the open side of the housing is covered by a fluid impervious stretchable membrane whereby the discharging of a selected gas under pressure into the housing will cause the membrane to be inflated and expanded outwardly of the open side of the housing to cushion any object moving in a direction toward the housing.

Abstract: An apparatus (10) for helping to protect an occupant of a vehicle (12) having a roof (60) and a side structure (40) includes an inflatable device (16) having a deflated condition and having an inflated condition. In the inflated condition, a head portion (22) of the inflatable device is inflated between the occupant's head and the vehicle roof and a side portion (20) of the inflatable device is inflated between the occupant and the vehicle side structure.
