Abstract:
A forming device for gathering the width of a traveling web is disclosed. The forming device includes opposing arrays of flute-forming bars that can be interlaced to define therebetween a longitudinal flute-forming labyrinth effective to reduce the width of a web traveling therethrough by a preselected take-up ratio. The flute-forming bars are curved beginning at an entry end of the forming device such that they converge in a lateral direction as they proceed in the machine direction. In this manner, individual elements of the web traveling between the respective arrays in the machine direction follow contour lines along the curved bars or between adjacent ones of the curved bars so that no such element crosses any flute-forming bar in the cross-machine direction as the web travels and is fluted. A corrugating die for introducing a near-net shape to the intermediate-fluted web is also disclosed, as are a corrugating line incorporating these operations and methods for its operation.

An article is provided comprising a plurality of straight spaced parallel extruded elements separated by a regularly undulated extruded element having an aspect ratio of at least about two, with undulations having opposed apexes on either side thereof, with apexes on one side of the undulated element being bonded to one of the parallel extruded elements and the apexes on the other side of the undulated element being bonded to the other of said parallel extruded elements. The article is formed by extruding a first filament-forming extrudable plastic mass to form a plurality of straight spaced continuous parallel elements, extruding (at a faster extrusion rate and between adjacent parallel elements) a second filament-forming extrudable plastic mass to form an undulatable element which is thinner than it is wide to provide a cross-section with an aspect ratio of at least about two, causing the undulatable element to undulate in its thin dimension and to bond to the straight spaced continuous parallel elements, and changing or permitting the change of the formed, extruded plastic mass so that subsequent bonding will no longer occur and so that the elements have sufficient structural integrity to maintain their extruded bonded shape.

An apparatus for manufacturing an alignment layer includes: a dispenser which supplies an alignment material; an anilox roll, onto which the alignment material supplied from the dispenser is applied; a printing roll which is engaged and rotated with the anilox roll; and a resin plate attached to an outer peripheral surface of the printing roll, where the resin plate receives the alignment material applied onto the anilox roll and prints the alignment material to a targeted substrate, in which the resin plate comprises a first area and a second area surrounding the first area, first convex portions and first concave portions are disposed in the first area, second convex portions and second concave portions are disposed in the second area, and an area of each second convex portion is larger than an area of each first convex portion.

A metallic layer is formed on a resin-made dial plate main body by surface treatment. A front surface of the main body is provided with a circular or arc-shaped second design face around a rotation shaft of a pointer, and a first inwardly inclined face and an outwardly inclined face continued to the second design face so as to rim an inside and an outside of the second design face and gradually extending toward a rear surface as extending away from the second design face. These first inwardly inclined face and outwardly inclined face are provided on a smooth face. Other portions except these first inwardly inclined face and outwardly inclined face are provided on a corrugated face on which a plurality of convexes and concaves are formed and having a surface roughness rougher than the smooth face.

A corrugated sheet formed from a thermoplastic polymer is disclosed. The sheet has a plurality of fluid flow passages through each corrugation. At least one slope, and preferably both slopes, of each corrugation has a plurality of slits in side-by-side arrangement extending through the sheet, with the fluid flow passages being formed by displacement of the thermoplastic polymer between each pair of slits relative to the thermoplastic polymer between the pairs of slits adjacent thereto. One example of use of the corrugated sheet is in a panel heat exchanger, to cause turbulence in fluid passing through the heat exchanger. The preferred thermoplastic polymer is polyamide.

A slit film and method of making same, the slits forming apertures defined by a plurality of axially oriented spaced apart ribbons, the film is pre-slit to define a plurality of substantially parallel interconnected ribbons and stretched axially of said ribbons to orient the ribbons and neck same down to define the open areas therebetween. Preferably, the ribbons will be interconnected at spaced apart nodes.
