Abstract:
The present invention relates to methods and apparatus for self-sharpening micro surgical blades, knives and assemblies including those having a cutting edge that is less than 500 angstroms thick where the cutting edge is an exposed section of a thin planar layer or region that is supported on one or both sides by a material having a higher wear rate.
Abstract:
An apparatus has a motor, a shaft attached to the motor arranged to be turned by the motor when the motor operates, an attachment at an end of the shaft opposite the motor arranged to allow mounting of components to be ground, a loading block arranged under the end of the shaft having the attachment to support the components to be ground, and an interface to a grinding tool arranged adjacent to the loading block. An apparatus has a motor mounted on a slide, a shaft attached to the motor arranged to spin when the motor operates. an attachment on the end of the shaft to allow attachment of a component, a loading block at least partially supporting the shaft. an interface to a manufacturing tool, the motor and shaft arranged to insert the shaft into the interface when moved along the slide to an engaged position.
Abstract:
A rotary blade sharpener is comprised of a motorized platen positioned in a housing with a surrounding wall and an open top. An abrasive sheet with an adhesive bottom surface is adhered to a disc, which is tightened to the platen by a knob. The disc is color coded to indicate the grit of the abrasive sheet. An adjustable support rack is hinged to the housing above the platen. A jig is positioned on the rack and arranged to slide side to side thereon. The jig is arranged to receive and securely hold a blade and position it against the abrasive sheet. The rack is adjustable to position a beveled front end of the blade flat on the abrasive sheet. A lubricant container with a drip tube is attached to the housing. A cutout in the surrounding wall is arranged to enable grinding a flat side of the blade.
Abstract:
An arthroscopic shaver with an inner cutting window having a plurality of teeth positioned along the lateral cutting edges, the teeth being configured for easy penetration into tissue to prevent ejection of tissue from the cutting window during closure. The inner cutting edges are formed complete by a predetermined sequence of positioning moves and grinding passes on a multi-axis grinding machine. The teeth may be symmetrically or asymmetrically placed about the tube axis when viewed in a plan view.
Abstract:
A reciprocal blade lapping machine (20) is taught that is used for sharpening cutting and shearing blades. The lapping machine consists a convex lap plate (32) mounted on an enclosure (22) rotated by an electric motor (34) connected to a speed reducer (36). A lapping compound distribution system is positioned directly above the lap plate and disperses lapping compound (64) onto the convex upper surface (48) of the lap plate providing an abrasive media for removing parent material from a set of blades placed on the lap plate. A conditioning ring (66), including dead weigh within, is rotatably disposed on the lap plate impacting directly upon the rotating lap plate maintaining the convex contour. A pair of reciprocating work piece holders (74) slideably rest on the lap plate, and alternately slide work pieces (76) backward and forward in a straight line on the rotating lap plate upper surface. Matched set of work pieces (76) are retained by the work piece hold downs (98) located within the work piece holders against the convex surface of the rotating lap plate, for sharpening by honing the mating cutting faces of the work pieces.
Abstract:
A dental tool sharpener is disclosed having a base. A grinding surface is rotatably attached to the base about a fixed axis, the axis of rotation being perpendicular to the base. a positioner is attached to the base and aligns a top face of a blade of a dental tool such that the top face is substantially perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the grinding surface. A gripper is attached to the base for grasping the dental tool and for transporting the dental tool from the positioner to the grinding surface while maintaining the top face substantially perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the grinding surface.
Abstract:
A device for quickly aligning a punch tool for grinding a surface of it comprising a punch tool holder having a spheroidal outer surface; at least two adjustable jaws in a rotatable chuck which jaws are movable into and out of clamping engagement with the spheroidal outer surface of the tool holder; and an abutment device movably or removably attached to the grinding machine for abutting against a face of a punch tool to align it perpendicular to the axis of chuck rotation when the jaws are in the clamped position so that the punch tool face can be ground by a spinning grinding wheel moved perpendicular to the chuck rotation axis.A method of aligning a punch tool for grinding a surface thereof on a grinding machine. The method for aligning comprises the steps of releasably holding the surface of the punch tool to be ground perpendicular to the rotation axis of a rotatable chuck of the grinding machine and parallel to the direction of slidable movement of a grinding wheel of the grinding machine; clamping the punch tool in the chuck so that the surface remains in the releasably held position; and releasing the releasably held surface of the punch tool so that the tool remains clamped in the chuck and the punch tool surface can be ground.
Abstract:
A sharpening device for the rotatable cutting rasp of a tire buffing machine comprises a cylindrical rotatable sharpening stone carried at the free end of an arm which is pivoted to the frame of the machine to allow the operator to bring the stone into contact with the rotating rasps. Engagement of the edge of the rasp with the periphery of the stone causes the stone to rotate at lower speed than the rasp due to an adjustable spring-biased brake acting on the stone. An adjustable stop arrangement prevents over-sharpening.
