A laser path of the laser interferometer passes through the rod and extends in the moving direction, so that a moving axis of the rod, a thrust axis of the drive mechanism and a detection axis of the laser interferometer are aligned.

A variable speed and direction power transmission attachment for driving the cutting tool carriage of a lathe or the like, the attachment having sets of intermeshing male and female cog gears. Certain of such sets each comprises a face gear having a plurality of concentric rows of tooth socket elements formed therein. A male cog gear is selectively settable to mesh with any of such rows to change the gear ratio. By changing the combined setting of different sets of gears, a wide variation in overall gear ratio may be obtained to provide many different feeding speeds of the carriage, suitable for general cutting and for screw thread cutting. A reversing mechanism, also constructed of intermeshing cog gears, enables the direction of drive to be reversed or the drive to be disconnected to permit manual drive of the carriage.

In each case two adjacent compensation rods are connected together at one end via a joint and are connected at the other end to the elongate part of the linear drive via one of two joint arrangements that are arranged in each case at the end of the elongate part. The compensation rods and the elongate part of the linear drive are arranged in the form of a triangle and the angle between the compensation rods and the joint is variable by a thermal change in length of the elongate part of the linear drive. The carriage is connected to the joint and the short part of the linear drive is connected to the base.

A motor, a ball screw shaft, etc. are accommodated within a frame that forms an outer frame. Direct-acting guides are provided on both sides of a groove-shaped opening defined in the frame. The ball screw shaft is centrally disposed within the frame. A table slides along the direct-acting guides under the action of rotation of the ball screw shaft. The ball screw shaft has ball-screw splines formed over its entire length and both ends thereof supported by the motor and a bearing. The center of rotation of the ball screw shaft is brought into alignment with the centers of rotation of the motor and the bearing by balls inserted into the ball-screw splines.
