    摘要: A process for rolling steel rod is provided whereby rolling rod at delivery speeds in excess of 15,000 fpm and cooling same after laying it in spread-out ring form on a conveyor is made feasible with less risk of cobbles and improved rod quality especially in the medium to high carbon content range by entering the rod after rolling into the laying head and thereafter cooling same non-uniformly through a grain size growing phase and a transformation phase with the non-uniformity of cooling rate during the transformation phase being kept in substantially inverse proportion to the differences in effective grain size established in the first phase. In addition a very long cooling conveyor which is necessitated by such delivery speeds (not only for high carbon steels but also low carbon and low alloy steels) is provided without requiring additional horizontal space, by arranging the conveyor in a multiplicity of tiers, spaced vertically, running in opposite directions, and being provided with means for transferring the rings from one tier to the next. Cobbles on the conveyor at high delivery speeds are minimized by coiling with 1/2" spacing, and by reforming means adapted for high speed delivery of rings from the conveyor onto an upwardly sloping mandrel surface, or into a curved chute which stacks the rings on their sides. An intermittent reheat method is employed for processing rod where slow cooling and/or heat treatment at a steady temperature is required.

    摘要: A workpiece issuing from a rolling mill is directed by a tubular guide to pass above the knives of a flying shear that is driven in a drive train used to rotate a cam used to pivot the guide tube and direct the workpiece into the shear. The workpiece moves beyond the shear into one of a plurality of retardation channels formed in a drum. There may be shock absorbers at their remote ends to prevent escapement of the sheared workpieces in the event they fail to stop by sliding friction. The drum rotates at a relatively slow speed. When a trailing end of a sheared workpiece moves beyond the shear into the drum, the leading end of the remaining length of workpiece enters a laterally-adjacent channel which has moved into the path of travel by the workpiece through rotation of the drum. A conveyor receives workpieces discharged from the drum through rotation thereof and carries them to a remote discharge station where they are loaded into a cradle car.

    摘要: A cooling bed for cooling and straightening rods or bars which are delivered hot from a rolling mill as side-by-side conveyor chains provided with projections between which pockets for the articles are defined. Reversal sprocket wheels at the infeed end are interconnected so that the pockets at the infeed end remain accurately in alignment, notwithstanding chain wear and differential expansion under the heat conditions. Reversal sprocket wheels at the discharge end are not drivingly interconnected, at least under normal operating conditions. Individual hydraulic drive motors drive the reversal wheels as shown or separate drive wheels which cooperate with the lower runs of the conveyor chains to keep the upper runs taut individually. The individually driven sprocket wheels are mounted with angular lost motion on a connection shaft to avoid one of the motors being overloaded under exceptional circumstances.

    摘要: A conveyor having an upper level where articles are engaged and carried from the bottom thereof, a lower level where articles are engaged and moved from the top thereof and a transition section for moving articles between the two levels. The conveyor has a magnetic rail extending along the lower level and transition section for holding the articles on the conveyor. Selective ejection of articles from the lower level at certain unloading positions therealong is provided by removing the articles from the effective magnetic field of the magnetic rail. Suitable controls are provided for unloading articles at a plurality of unloading positions.
