Abstract: A method of forming a coating on a food or beverage container, which includes spraying a coating composition onto an interior surface of the food or beverage container, where the coating composition includes a latex copolymer and a metal drier or crosslinking agent. The latex copolymer is a reaction product of monomers that include (a) one or more styrene-mimicking monomers containing one or more cyclic groups and one or more ethylenically-unsaturated groups, at least a portion of such styrene-mimicking monomers being polycyclic monomers containing ring unsaturation, and (b) one or more other ethylenically-unsaturated monomers. Preferably, the coating composition is substantially free of each of BPA, PVC, other halogenated monomers, and optionally styrene. The method may also include curing the sprayed coating composition, thereby providing the coating on the interior surface of the food or beverage container.

Abstract: There is described an acrylic polyester resin, obtainable by grafting an acrylic polymer with a polyester material. The polyester material is obtainable by polymerizing (i) a polyacid component, with (ii) a polyol component, including—2,2,4,4-tetraalkylcyclobutane-1,3-diol. One of the polyacid component or the polyol component comprises a functional monomer operable to impart functionality on to the polyester resin, such that an acrylic polymer may be grafted with the polyester material via the use of said functionality. Also provided is an aqueous coating composition comprising the acrylic polyester resin and a metal packaging containing coated with the composition.

Abstract: An aqueous coating composition is provided that is preferably substantially free of styrene and structural units derived from styrene. The coating composition includes a resin system that preferably includes a water-dispersible polymer and an emulsion polymerized ethylenically unsaturated monomer component. The resin system is preferably formed using a process that includes emulsion polymerizing the ethylenically unsaturated monomer component in the presence of an aqueous dispersion including the water-dispersible polymer. In certain preferred embodiments, the water-dispersible polymer is a salt of an acid- or anhydride-functional aromatic polyether polymer.

Abstract: Coating compositions and methods of using these compositions to form tough, abrasion resistant, and water resistant coatings on metal-containing substrates are described. Coating compositions are derived from one or more ingredients comprising at least one copolymer, referred to herein as Copolymer I, that preferably comprises (a) one or more repeating units (Repeating Unit(s) A) comprising at least one hydrophilic ester functionality and at least one polar functionality; and (b) one or more additional kinds of copolymerizable repeating units (Repeating Unit(s) B). Preferably, repeating Unit(s) A are a residue of an unsaturated monoester of a diacid or anhydride thereof having a carbon-carbon double bond, wherein at least one hydrophilic ester is pendant from a first carbon of the carbon-carbon double bond and at least on polar group is pendant from the second carbon of the carbon-carbon double bond. The monoester preferably is the reaction product of one or more water soluble or water dispersible alcohols with an unsaturated diacid or anhydride thereof.
