A device for producing patterns includes a heater heating a thermal conductivity mask that has at least one cavity, and a thin film positioned adjacent to the mask. The heater may be any convenient heat source. In a preferred embodiment, the thermal conductivity mask is a plate having a pattern of cavities, holes or openings, and the thin film is held in tension over the mask. The cavities, holes or openings in the mask reduce the rate of heat flow because they contain material having lower thermal conductivity than the material of the mask. Thus the thermal conductivity mask can produce a pattern by selectively conducting heat, because properties or characteristics, such as the color, of a sample placed on the thin film can change with exposure to heat. The thermal conductivity mask achieves high print or pattern quality by utilizing the large difference between thermal conductivities of the cavity, typically air, and the mask, typically a metal. In an embodiment of a picture pancake maker, a heater heats and cooks pancake batter placed on the thin film. Pancake batter is selectively heated more and cooked more rapidly in areas where the thermal conductivity mask contacts the thin film and heated less and cooked more slowly in areas where the thin film covers a cavity, hole or opening in the mask.

The duration data varies over the selected elements of the grid array so that different selected elements of the grid array are selected for different durations of time.

The message image member of the stamper is vented, with a hollow venting chimney above each image for venting excess food product away from the food product bearing the image. In addition the images are surrounded by a suppressing wall suppressing food product from being inadvertently squashed too much The venting chimneys above each letter are preferably curved, and the images are sharp at the edges with pointy tipped letters/images.
