A food item is prepared by depositing food (14) as lanes in the form of rows of discrete patterns (14a) on strips (16a-16c) of support material (16) defined by fold lines defined by perforations (62a, 62b). In a strip sheeter (12), the first roller (18) is heated and is smooth for abutting with the support material (16). The outer periphery of the second roller (20) including depressions (24) forming the patterns (14a) is formed of material to which food (14) has less tendency to stick to than the support material (16), with the patterns (14a) arranged to create tensional removal. An edible, liquid release agent can be sprayed upon the second roller (20). Perforations (62a, 62b) are cut by rotary knives (62). The first strip (16a) is folded to overlie the first lane of food (14) on the second strip (16b), and the third strip (16c) is folded to abut the second lane of food (14) thereon and opposite to the second strip (16b).

Method and system for continuously producing pieces of liquid-filled gum material. An extruded rope of liquid-filed gum is sized and separated into individual pieces of gum. A rotating drum mechanism having a die ring and cutter ring with mating die members separate the rope of gum material into individual pieces. Pairs of cam-operated plunger members compress and form the pieces of gum material in the die cavities. Angled grooves in the die members prevent portions of the gum pieces from being chipped-off during formation. Guide pin members are positioned between rider members on the plunger members. A feed chute with air assist transfers the gum rope from a sizing table to the rotating drum mechanism. A stripper member insures that the formed pieces of gum material are removed from the drum mechanism. Portions of the drum mechanism can be selective heated and cooled, or not cooled at all. The invention provides a more efficient system for continuous, high production operation.

Three-dimensional objects are produced from a deformable material received substantially continuously in the direction of production and the objects are produced by a deforming process substantially in the direction of production. Rotatable devices are arranged to deform a respective section of the deformable material with at least one of the rotatable devices being shaped so as to vary the extent of deformation applied to the deformable material periodically as a deformable material passes through in the direction of production.

In one preferred form, methods and apparatus are provided for cutting individual confectionery products from a slab or strip of product material into a product with a particular silhouette. In another form, the invention provides methods and apparatus for both cutting and forming individual confectionery products from strips or ropes. The process can be used for simply forming products from pre-cut segments or other blanks of confectionery material, including imparting a relatively precise texture, finish or detail to such products. The products may, but need not, be subsequently enrobed in chocolate or another coating. In still other embodiments, the confectionery material may comprise grains of a puffed cereal. In some instances, a matrix of plasticizable material holds the grains together and the confectionery material may also include, in addition to the puffed cereal, candied fruit bits, dry fruits, nuts, or the like. In some cases, the puffed cereal may be held together by surface contact between adjacent grains instead of being held by the matrix.

An apparatus for extruding a mass onto a moving support mechanism. A first cylinder for receiving the mass within its interior has an exit channel through which the mass is forced. A second cylinder is disposed about the first cylinder for relative rotation with respect to the first cylinder. The second cylinder includes a plurality of forming channels which repeatedly aligned with the exit channel of the first cylinder during relative rotation of the cylinders and through which the mass is forced. A plurality of nozzles are formed in the outer surface of the second cylinder and are shaped and arranged for guiding the excess mass away from the exit ends of the forming channels during at least a portion of the rotational movement of said second cylinder and for guiding the excess mass into the extruded mass at the extruding position of the apparatus.
