    摘要: Infectious diseases can be transmitted to humans, or between humans and animals, by airborne viruses and bacteria, known as infectious aerosols. Current protective measures that individuals can take to avoid inhaling such aerosols are either marginally effective (personal face masks) or impractical (self-contained breathing apparatuses). Building ventilation systems employing high-efficiency filters to prevent distribution of such aerosols suffer from high energy costs and high filter replacement costs. The development of conventional, intramuscularly administered vaccines takes months or years to produce enough doses to protect a population from a rapidly spreading infectious disease. Airborne viruses and bacteria have been shown to be completely inactivated when exposed to non-thermal plasmas. Results indicate the potential for sub-lethal exposures of airborne pathogens could render them unable to spark an infection in a host, but still retain the necessary surface proteins to cause an immune response in the host.

    摘要: An assay plate assembly comprising a plurality of microfluidic modules arranged in a rectilinear matrix of rows and columns microfluidic channels. Each microfluidic module has an inlet well leading to a serpentine microfluidic channel that is set at a cant angle. The well is laterally offset from the detection area to avoid optical interference. The geometric center of each detection area is positioned according to ANSI/SLAS standards for well-centers. A drain from each microfluidic channel is located so that it does not interfere with any detection areas. An array of micro-posts are disposed within each microfluidic channel. The micro-posts extend perpendicularly from the top surface of the top plate toward the underside and are equally distributed throughout the entire detection area. The plate assembly provides reduced assay time and sample volume, and increased sensitivity and specificity in biological and chemical assays.

    摘要: A method of removing microvessels includes applying a burst of acoustic energy at a target location, applying a pulse of optical energy at the target location, and promoting cavitation at the target location by synchronizing an arrival of the burst of acoustic energy and the optical energy at the target location. The burst of acoustic energy has a pressure below 5.0 MPa. The pulse of optical energy at the target location has a fluence less than 100 mJ/cm2. At least a portion of the pulse is concurrent with the burst and the optical energy has an optical area that is overlapping with an acoustic area of the acoustic energy at the target location.
