摘要: A method of producing battery electrodes by advancing a strip of felt of glass fibers longitudinally and intended to function as supports for electrodes. Connecting members for the electrodes are formed on the felt at longitudinally spaced zones by injecting molten lead or a lead alloy into these zones. The injection is accomplished by clamping the strip periodically between two mold halves defining a cavity corresponding to the desired configuration of a connecting member to be formed on the felt electrode support and injecting the molten lead or lead alloy into the cavity under pressure so that it is injected to or penetrates into the felt. The molten material is solidified in the cavity and a compacted, electrically conductive connecting member is accordingly formed in the corresponding zone. The electrode in electrical contact with these zones formed may be developed by metallizing the felt before or after formation of the connecting members. The felt is then cut to the lengths desired for the electrodes with connecting members formed thereon.

摘要: Method of manufacturing a positive nickel hydroxide electrode. A highly porous core structure of organic material having a fibrous or reticular texture is uniformly coated with nickel powder and then subjected to a thermal treatment which provides sintering of the powder coating and removal of the organic core material. A consolidated, porous nickel support structure is thus produced which has substantially the same texture and porosity as the initial core structure. To provide the positive electrode including the active mass, nickel hydroxide is deposited in the pores of the nickel support structure.

摘要: An electro-optical device for selectively displaying a set of alphanumerical characters has three or more closely juxtaposed carrier plates, all transparent or translucent with the possible exception of the last one, defining a plurality of cells filled with liquid crystals, each cell containing a pair of confronting electrodes supported on the major surfaces of its carrier plates. One electrode of each cell is subdivided into spaced-apart segments individually energizable to alter the light transmissivity of its liquid crystal, the patterns of these segments being different for the several cells and being so chosen as to synthesize any digit and/or alphabetic character upon selective energization thereof. The other cell electrode is a continuous counterelectrode so shaped as not to register with the energizing lead of any segment of the confronting patterned electrode.

摘要: There is disclosed a knitting machine each of the knitting needles of which is provided with a hook and a latch capable of pivoting between two positions. In the first position the latch rests against the inside of the hook to close the hook, and in the second position the latch rests against a stop provided on the needle. In the second position, a spur provided on the latch projects beyond the shank of the needle. In order to open and close the hook during knitting, the machine is provided with two pushers for each needle, one pusher being arranged on one side of the needle to contact the spur of the latch to push the latch from the second position to the first position, and the other pusher being arranged on the other side of the needle to contact the latch to push the latch from the first position to the second position.

摘要: In order to produce sheet glass of a thickness less than normal equilibrium thickness from a layer of molten glass deposited on a fluidic support, a solid structure with a plenum chamber is positioned above the support while air or other gas under pressure is discharged from the plenum chamber, through a peripheral slot, in a downwardly converging gas curtain which builds up a pressure head in the space between the support and the flat underside of the structure. This pressure head may be utilized to balance the weight of the overlying structure for floatingly maintaining same above the support in spaced relationship with the glass layer deposited thereon.

摘要: A polarization device for the headlights of motor vehicles comprising a multilayer Brewster angle polarizer for decomposing the incident light into a pair of linearly polarized pencils of light rays extending perpendicularly to one another, a phase shifter for shifting the phase of the pencil of light rays reflected by the polarizer by half a wavelength and for rotating its polarization plane through 90.degree., and a plane mirror for directing the phase-shifted pencil of rays parallel to the pencil of rays transmitted by the angle polarizer which is connected to the phase shifter and the mirror so that the reflected phaseshifted pencil of rays is again transmitted by the angle polarizer to avoid subsequent polarization with a dichroitic polarization foil which is disadvantageous because of excessive heat generation.

摘要: A coating applicator for the painting of underwater surfaces comprises a rotary brush whose hollow body, mounted on the shaft of a driven motor, has a chamber communicating with a source of paint under pressure. A bunch of bristles on the brush body is supplied with paint from the chamber via flexible tubes terminating just short of the bristle tips. A peripheral array of relatively hard bristles may receive another reagent, e.g., a solvent, from a separate compartment of the brush body while an inner core of harder bristles is supplied with paint.

摘要: A continuous catalytic fused salt extraction process is described for removing sulfur oxides from gaseous streams. The gaseous stream is contacted with a molten liquid potassium sulfate salt mixture at a temperature below 500* C. having dissolved V2O5 to catalytically oxidize sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide and molten potassium normal sulfate to solvate the sulfur trioxide to remove the sulfur trioxide from the gaseous stream. A portion of the sulfur trioxide loaded salt mixture is then placed in an electrolytic cell and with an electrical potential applied between an anode and a cathode to fume the SO3 solute and form a high purity offgas of SO3 and regenerate the molten potassium normal sulfate. The evolved SO3 may be used directly to yield a variety of useful sulfur by-products including liquid sulfur trioxide, sulfuric acids and oleums of any concentrations, liquid sulfur dioxide and elemental sulfur.
