    摘要: There is described an EHID lamp that comprises a field applicator, a means for coupling RF power to the field applicator, and a discharge vessel; the discharge vessel being disposed within the field applicator and containing a discharge medium; the field applicator being comprised of a solid, transparent or translucent dielectric material and having an optical control surface and a conductive coating that substantially covers its external surfaces. By combining functions served by otherwise individual components, the EHID lamp of this invention has the potential for reducing parts count, improving RF coupling to the plasma, reducing shadowing, and improving reliability.

    摘要: The restrike time for re-light up of an arc discharge lamp may be decreased by including at least one refractory bimetallic start up electrode that provides a shorter arc path intermediate the main arc path in a cool state, but when heated withdraws to have a relatively longer arc path. The longer arc path in the hot state results in a relatively higher path impedance that can be used by itself or in combination with a supplemental impedance device to extinguish the starting arc in favor of the main arc. The withdrawn bimetallic starting electrode then does not interfere with the main arc function.

    摘要: A method of operating an arc discharge lamp and a lamp in which a light transmissive envelope encloses electrode tips, a salt and a fill that includes iodine, and in which after turning the lamp off, a first part of the light transmissive envelope is locally cooled relative to other parts of the light transmissive envelope to provide a condensation site for the iodine that is spaced from the electrode tips, the first part of the light transmissive envelope being where a salt reservoir forms and where the salt is cooled by the local cooling. The local cooling may be provided by an indentation in an outer sleeve around the light transmissive envelope, where the indentation contacts the first part to provide a heat sink.

    摘要: An arc tube for an electrodeless metal halide discharge lamp has an arc chamber fabricated from a material selected from the group consisting of magnesia-doped polycrystalline alumina, silicon dioxide doped polycrystalline alumina and mono-crystalline alumina. The arc chamber is tubular and has at least one end and has a given outside diameter. At least one end cap closes the at least one end of the arc chamber, the end cap being formed from magnesia-doped polycrystalline alumina and comprising a substantially cup-shaped member having an inside diameter which is sealed to the outside diameter of the arc chamber by a shrink-fit.

    摘要: An electrodeless lamp may be formed with a capsule having a radiant energy transmissive material defining an approximately cylindrical enclosed volume having an external length less than 20.0 millimeters, and an outer diameter less than 8.0 millimeters. The enclosed volume is filled with a lamp fill excitable by a high frequency electromagnetic field to produce radiant energy. The small size capsule produces a particularly efficient, orientation tolerant arc discharge. The arc is then highly stable as to position, yielding a good optical source to design for. The temperature gradient is small, thereby yielding little thermal stress on the capsule. An electrodeless HID headlamp system may be formed with the efficient capsule from a radio frequency source operating from the power supply of a typical automobile. The headlamp system includes a high frequency power source, a transmission line, a coupler, an excitable lamp fill captured in a lamp capsule, a reflector and a lens.

    摘要: A fluorescent lamp based on a phosphor excited by a molecular discharge is described. The fluorescent lamp comprises a fluorescent lamp coated with a manganese doped magnesium aluminate phosphor on the inside surface of the lamp envelope. The fluorescent lamp contains corrosion resistant filamentary electron emitting electrodes. The fluorescent lamp produces a plasma which emits 206 nm radiation from the molecular discharge of the iodine containing molecular vapors and inert gas fill which in turn excites the phosphor to emit visible light.
